What are you writing about now?

Yes, that explains the mocking aspect of Denethor's use of liege.

The more (perhaps) surprising case is that after Pippin spoke his oath of fealty before Denethor, Pippin actually became Denethor's liege. They were lieges to each other. (Or, noting the similarity with another word, in league with one another.)

Liege Definitions: 1. a loyal subject, or 2. a feudal superior to whom allegiance and service are due.
Oooooooooo I did Not see that coming! I didn't know the first definition before now. What a fascinating word, and how strange is language. We use the same word for opposite meanings, sometimes within similar contexts, and still know roughly what we're talking about!

Oh! This actually explains a phrase I heard once in a book. "I do not speak now as liege-lord to liege-man..."
At the time, I wasn't sure why the author included liege in both titles, but now I understand! Thank you for this 😁🥰

Sometimes generic French words become more specific in English, so I thought it was possible it might refer to a specific type/shape of helmet. But it doesn't appear to be the case here.
From dictionary.com. I think #1 would be the oldest, #2 as medieval-style helmets weren't worn anymore, so specifics didn't matter to most people any more.

  1. an open, conical helmet with a nose guard, commonly used in the medieval period.
  2. any helmet-shaped head covering.
  3. Zoology. a process or formation on the head, resembling a helmet.

Scat: a type of waste from small rodents.

Horse apples: the same, but from horses.

Serried: I don't know this one, unfortunately.

Beseech: combines "beg" and "plead", to my understanding. It's a most pitiful form of them both.

Boon: "A boon, a boon!" Quoth Little John.
The terms "favor" and "gift" do not quite match the meaning of this word. It is both, from a superior to a subject, both able to come from every social class, as long as one has power over the other.

Entreaty: a similar word to beseech. However, an entreaty is longer, and can apply to an entire noun as a letter written as an entreaty), whereas "beseech" applies to verbs only.

Sussuration: I do not know this one either, though it reminds me of ressuscitation.

Orch: part of me wonders if this is a mistyped "orc", but if not, I do not know this word either.

yrch, fëa, hröa. Inflict us with Sindarin, will ye, sir? I know two off the top of my head: Yrch is orc, Fëa is spirit. Hröa I have heard and really should know, given how often I delve into the Parf Edhellen dictionary, but I don't recall the meaning right now.

Rent: as in, the action "to tear", I suppose. "The air was rent with the sound of wailing".

Sacked: to have been sacked, or to have been dispossessed of everything. A great example of this verb are the many sackings carried out by Norse Viking warriors.

Razed: absolutely, thoroughly destroyed. Commonly happens to a city or town.

Wedge: can be both a noun and a verb. A wedge is a block made for wedging, which is to create an obstacle between two objects by force.

Shield wall: a line of men who overlap their shield with each other. A common defence tactic.

Gawp: more embarrassing than gape, wider than merely open. I think this can also be an insult.

Aye, let's 😁
It will be one way of improving our vocabulary, and that's always a good thing.

You may do the honors if you wish! The game came from you after all.

Sussuration is a sound alike to whispering/murmuring/whistling.

Orch: part of me wonders if this is a mistyped "orc", but if not, I do not know this word either.

Orch: Singular form of orc in Sindarin.

Yrch: Plural form of orc in Sindarin.

Fëa: Soul/spirit (Quenya)

Hröa: Body (Quenya)

And here are two more words:

Succour (succor = American spelling)

Sustenance
Succour(it does look better with British spelling: assistance, help, rescue.

Sustenance: means of sustaining oneself, commonly food. Nourishment is, I believe, a synonym.
