how old is Fangorn (treebeard) during the war of the ring? any answer or approximate answer you have is very much welcome!

I was thinking on Ents earlier today, and it came to me that I think that the very name of these beings is a joke. I find it humorous that you can sum up these creatures into a one syllable "hasty" word. Hoom hom.

In LoTR, Gandalf said that Treebeard was the oldest living thing on Middle Earth. Treebeard also said that the Elves woke them up. Bombadil said that he was in Middle Earth before even the first acorn. In Morgoth's Ring, p. 52, in the year 1500 VY, it says that 'there was a great growth...

Treebeard's answer seems to suggest that back in the time of the Numenoreans, the Ents were roused to act. But, there is no mention of it anywhere else (that I can find). Has anyone actually found a mention of the Ents' fight against Sauron in any of the unfinished writings? Would be interesting...

"Treebeard lifted two great vessels and stood them on the table. They seemed to be filled with water; but he held his hands over them, and immediately they began to glow, one with a golden and the other with a rich green light..." And later when he got upset talking about Saruman: "Treebeard...

Well, not I, but a member by the name of Teleporno (Telerin for Celeborn) of the Tolkien board Minas Tirith claims in the thread "I Found the Entwives!" to have found them. He has not revealed exactly where in LOTR he found them, but he has given several hints. But only one other member...

I have yet to read anything on this. But what place does the Ents have in the legendarium? This is what Manwë said was Eru's words on the matter of Ents: These spirits mentioned in the quote are in my opinion most probably maiar of some lesser degree. So if an Ent is hewn, is it then fair to...

Just confirming, in chapter 2 in Sil(Of Aule and Yavanna) Yavanna talks about how Aule creation the Dwarves and the other children will eventually show no love for her creations(trees etc), Manwe tells her that there will be, "Shepards of the Forest" to protect them from misuse. Is this a...

What is the 'Great Darkness' of which he speaks? He says that the shadow of the Great Darkness has not been lifted from all of the forests. He talks of ents becoming like trees, and trees like ents. Who can explain Old Man Willow? Where are Tasarninan, Nan-Tasarion, Taur-na-neldor...

The Ents of Europe Strange rumblings on the continent. By Victor Davis Hanson One of the many wondrous peoples that poured forth from the rich imagination of the late J. R. R. Tolkien were the Ents. These tree-like creatures, agonizingly slow and covered with mossy bark, nursed themselves...

Aragorn tells Gandalf that he fancied the 'Ents' were a myth or a Rohhiric invention. Yet, presumably Aragorn knows all of the Tale of Tinúviel. It was of course a 'Númenórean' tale (M.T; HoME 10) and thus Aragorn should have been told _all_ of it, at Rivendell (Elrond would have known the full...

Are the Ents animals ot plants?

I was always saddened by the Ent's loss of the Entwives. What actually happened to them? Does Tolkien say in "the letters"? (Have'nt read those yet.) MB

I can’t help but wonder about this. In the Director’s commentary of TTT, Peter Jackson said he got a few complaints in reviews that Treebeard was slow and boring. He admitted that the song of the Entwives in the film was a “celebration of the fact that he was dull”, an attempt to make it...

I'm not quite sure about this. It seems to me I've read some things in LOTR that make this unclear. Let me see if I can dig up some quotes.. (Bombadil, speaking about himself in FOTR) (Gandalf, talking about Treebeard in TTT) They both seemed to be described as the oldest living...

Clearly there was tumult and war in Fangorn in the Second Age. But who caused it? I know everyone would of course say Sauron, because that is the most logical solution. But why would Sauron attack Fangorn when he had much more imminent threats to deal with, like Lindon, Gondor, Arnor, Rivendell...

my dear fellow Tolkien-lovers, allow me to present to you an amazing discovery concerning the origins of Ents! here is a piece taken from a Charles Dickens book, "Little Dorrit". the speaker is Mr. Dorrit: "I-ha- I most devoutly hope so, Amy. I sent for you in order that i might...

I've just seen H Potter 2, and found these two "characters" much more convincing than their near-equivalents in FOTR. Dobby is more "rounded" and realistic than Gollum who looks as if he has been drawn in; the WW is more solid and imposing than the bundles of sticks that seem to make up the ents.

This is a ridiculous question but Bombadil said he was eldest, which is basically the only knowledge we have about what he is, but why then did Gnadlaf say that Treebeard was eldest?

Ents....a happy end or not? Do you think the Ents managed to find the Entwives? Was Sam Gamgee's story a glimpse of the Entwives and could it represent a shred of hope that they will be reunited with the Ents someday? Or do you believe that they were all destroyed when Sauron assaulted...
