Hi,
I was just wondering if the tengwar is correct in the attached picture, for the riddle of the strider. I was also wondering if I could just take the second verse, and it would still make linguistic sense. Thankyou.
I know there are newer versions and multiple translations, but this is the only version I can find with videos of people actually pronouncing it. I want to learn to pronounce it as well as get a tattoo of this poem. Please let me know what you think, as well as if you know of better versions...
So, this tidbit of information is both mystifying, satisfying (in a way) and already got me curious.
So when Bilbo takes a plunge to Gollum's domain under the mountain, the narrator talks about creatures older than orcs in some corners of the mountain.
Could these be the same "Nameless...
This is something I've often wondered to myself. Gollum technically gets the answer right before he even makes his first guess.
I think he answered the question as inadvertently as Bilbo did the time riddle. However, there was no way at that time for Bilbo to realize that he had lost.
RULES
1. Someone posts a riddle about Tolkien person, place, or object. Who guesses correctly, gets to post his own riddle
2. If the riddle is not answered within ten days, or if the one who answered correctly doesn't post a new riddle, anyone could post a new riddle
3. Have fun!
Here's...
This thread is simply a forum version of the Riddle Game between Gollum and Bilbo in The Hobbit. You can draw riddles from any source providing it isn't too ambiguous. You can also make them up yourself; which is what I prefer to do. Here's the example of the final riddle asked by Gollum to...
Hello,
I need you. I am not an expert in English poetry? I know better French prosody.
Could you explain to me the rythm used in the riddles (chapter 5) ?
Does Tolkien use iamb, trochee, spondee, dactyl and anapest ?
Thanks
French Teacher
In "Riddles in the Dark", there is a description of riddles games being played by "ancient rules" and that not even a wicked creature like Gollum would dare break them. This is right after Bilbo wins the game with his famous "What have I got in my pocket?" question/riddle.
Is there any...
Continuing this favourite Hobbit pastime.
The answers must come from Middle Earth.
An easy one to start with...
What or who am I?
Sword with a button belonging to kings

i was recently watching LOTR:FOTRand was wondering about a certain quote. it's in the part where bilbo leaves and frodo comes home and finds the ring on the floor. gandalf is sitting by the fire smoking and he mutters "riddles in the dark". i was just wondering what he meant by this, if anyone...
I mentioned this in another thread but I thought that it deserved more attention as a new thread.
Ok, a discussion is underway on whether or not Bilbo cheated during the riddle game in "The Hobbit" against Gollum, by asking a question and not a riddle.
See the thread Riddle or Question...
Do you think it was fair of Bilbo to ask Gollum (what I beleive is) a question like this whilst playing a game of riddles? Even if Gollum was prepared to answer with 3 attempts it was still wrong and technically Bilbo should not have won the game. Gollum at this stage was unaware that he had...
Riddle One:
I soar without wings, I see without eyes.
I've traveled the universe to and fro.
I've conquered the world, yet I've never been anywhere but home.
Who am I?
Riddle Two:
I know a word of letters three, add two and fewer there will be?

What is it that...
