Sam Neill died.
His family released a statement: :they announced that his passing was "sudden and unexpected" and noted that he was "blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free".
He was 78. 😢
Maybe not much to discuss, but I'll give it a try as a topic:
On page 3 of The Ring Goes South...
Bilbo says, "Books ought to have good endings. How would this do: and they all settled down and lived together happily ever after?"
"It will do well, if it ever comes to that," said Frodo.
"Ah!"...
There actually is quite a parallel, and the two times may well have been close to each other too, though, admittedly, Denethor lost Boromir and seemed likely to lose Faramir, as well as himself in the battle, but, otherwise, things looked the same, or, indeed, probably BLEAKER for Sam, as if he...
This is a short linking chapter similar to the Flight to the Ford in book I.
As an aside there is a beautiful sentiment expressed by Faramir at the end of the previous chapter:
"If ever beyond hope you return to the lands of the living and we re-tell our tales, sitting by a wall in the sun...
Who is your favorite: Frodo, who resisted the Ring longer than anyone else and brought it to Mordor, or Sam, the faithful, and selfless friend who helped him do so? (Frodo and Sam from the book, not the movie.)
I remember reading it in the book long ago. The betrayal part never happend in the book (Yknow the bread scene), they both met the spider. Now as for the quarrel itself. I am unsure whether it was in the Tower where Sam saved Frodo. Or whether it was later on disguised as Orc where they...
In chapter 3 of The Fellowship of the Ring, Three is Company, Sam sets off on the journey with a felt hat that makes him look like a dwarf. What happened to that hat? It's never mentioned again. I'm very sad we didn't get to see it in the movies. Did anyone draw him leaving the Shire according...
After their return to the Shire, they formed a band:
Released some albums:
Even made a few movies, I hear.
It wasn't too long before they broke up.
And, oh yeah:
I was reading Clyde Kirby's 'Tolkien and the Silmarillion' and came across this;
'I have never known a reader who did not on the whole find Sam {Gamgee} a person to be admired. Yet Tolkien spoke to me about Sam as "vulgar" and "despicable,"....
Is this corroborated in any other sources - it...
Starting off with name-checks for Beren and Turin in the same sentence!
[OT] strange that the path through Cirith Ungol is said to be quicker than the Morgul road for crossing the mountains from the Dead City!
Anyway, unexpected possible corroboration of the tenuous Ungoliant mention earlier...
I’m writing my school essay on Sam and while doing so I’ve come across some of his best quotes. What are your favorite Sam quotes?
my favorites are:
-“It's like the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to...
As an poor labor class, he possibly got not enough military education. Was there any source or implication mentioned how Sam got the military combat skills so sophisticated enough to kick Shelob's ass?Was it gained by peers such as Frodo, Pippin, and so forth before Sam joined the Fellowship?
