I know Saruman's intention was to get the Ring for himself, but let's assume that, for whatever reason, the orcs of Isengard hadn't gotten there first and that Merry and Pippin were captured and were en route to Mordor via a Nazgul and Gandalf somehow knew about it and Saruman soon encountered...
Was it:
1.) Greed and envy
2.) Messing with that Palantir too much and going to deep into the arts of Sauron
3.) A desire for more wisdom so he could help Middle Earth, and he believed that the Ring was the best means to it (in this regard, Saruman wouldn't have been lying when he said to...
His whole plan hinged on three highly unlikely events, which I think the first one was actually his best bet, had Deagol and Smeagol not gotten there first:
1.) Look for the Ring at the river while letting the Council think it was perished.
2.) Win Gandalf over to his side (something even...
Gandalf appears to have died and been born as something else, for he seems to have trouble even recalling what went on earlier or even the name "Gandalf".
Saruman definitely dies as well
I think the Balrog was said to have died as well.
Sauron, even when his Ring was destroyed, was just...
I know this sounds absurd at first glance, but not if you think about it. Saruman had already been seduced by Sauron through the Palantir. (As strange as it sounds, I think Denethor actually was able to hold out stronger than him, in part because Denethor only had concern for his people, not...
Saruman says that Gandalf has three choices:
A.) Have the Wise form an Alliance with Sauron, get him to eventually trust them as councilors, and eventually come to run him like a puppet.
B.) Get the Ring for Gandalf/Saruman (I know, only one can wield the One Ring at a time) and overthrow...
I know Saruman messed up a lot of things by delaying Gandalf and the mess he made in Rohan, but Saruman's interference at the Falls of Rauros seems like it saved the quest from disaster.
Here is why:
Had not the Isengard orcs, I think they were called Urak hai, overpowered the Mordor orcs...
Hi. So I was thinking about when at the end of RoTK Saruman's parting words to Frodo are" Do not expect me to wish you health or long life. You will have neither. But that is not my doing. I only foretell." Is there any truth to this statement or is he just trying to get a rise out of Frodo. If...
Morgoth was causing trouble in the First age, eventually the Valar came over and took care of him. Then Sauron did the same thing, so the Valar sent over 5 Maiar, including Saruman himself, to deal with it. So even if Saruman managed to get the One Ring, wouldn't he think they would just send...
In Fellowship Of The Ring, the fellowship are forced to hide to not be seen by Saruman's spies, the Crebain from Dunland. One thing that I find odd, is that Saruman sent a whole flock of Crebain to spy on the fellowship. Couldn't he have simply sent one or two, to avoid the fellowship noticing...
Hi this is my first post here! :) ive been reading a lot of the forums o here and love how much every enjoys middle earth so i thought id join you lot. Now my first ever question on here is, does Saruman attack Rohan way too early?
The reason i ask this is because saruman attacks rohan at a...
As an Istari and the White Wizard, Saruman was said to be very powerful. And yet he allowed Isengard to be overrun by the Ents without putting any kind of fight.
And later, he seems to be powerless in the Scouring of the Shire and dies at Wormtongue's hand. Did the loss of his staff leave him...
Saruman seems to be evil in the Hobbit. He knows that Sauron is really the Necromancer and tries to deny Gandalf's claims to keep his master safe. When exactly did the White Wizard fall under the sway of the Dark Lord?
In the LOTR chapter "The Scouring of the Shire", Frodo, after meeting Saruman in the Shire, says this of him:
"He is fallen, and his cure is beyond us; but I would still spare him, in the hope that he may find it."
If Frodo is right, then fallen Maia could repent, maybe even become whole...
Some time ago I started a discussion with my friend, concerning Dragons, The One Ring and Saruman’s voice.
After reading J.R.R. Tolkien’s books I came to the coclusion that Dragons (be they dragon-worms or flying dragons) are Evil. They were bred for the first time by Morgoth, the ancient...
Remember the death of Saruman? As be left his body, he turned towards west, but a cold wind blew from there and he dissappeared. I think this is an indication that spirits can literally die..

Last night I popped in the Felowship Of The Ring (EE) as I was wrapping presents. I figured if I would be busy for a while, I could at least watch the movie. Anyway, there's a scene (chapter 12) where Gandalf is in Isengard with Saruman, and Saruman is trying to convince Gandalf that there is...
I have two enquiries. How did Gandalf get his staff back after being captured by Saruman? Saruman would have, no doubt, taken the staff when he captured him.
Was Gandalf defeated by the Witch-King and was Gandalf's staff broken? If not, does he take his staff with him to the undying lands...
This is really just a discussion on how Saruman fits all the qualities of a Tragic Character. The only question I have is: Does he acheive Transcendence? And any other things you would like to add to his Tragicness...
