This is a change of pace and focus from the previous three chapters. That being said, Hammond and Scull estimate Treebeard's walking speed is around 6 mph - a pace which he seems to be able to keep up ad infinitum. There is a similarity in that, as this chapter gives us much information about...
Tom Bombadil is described as "oldest and fatherless" in The Council of Elrond and Treebeard is described as "the oldest living thing that still walks beneath the sun" in The White Rider. Tom Shippey's explanation is to accept that Bombadil is not living in the way that the Nazgul and the...
This is a tricky, subtle one, so a bit belated.
Firstly, several vague references to the Darkness and Great Darkness, presumably relating to Morgoth's original appearance in Middle-earth rather than his return from captivity.
His song mentions the ancient forests (by various names) of...
I get that he'd have had a job getting into Mordor and to Mount Doom unseen, but assuming he could, and was given the Ring, could he be strong enough to resist its tricks to throw it into the fire?
I don't see him having much use for the thing, other than to perhaps find or bring back the...
This is something I've often wondered about. I know that Tom Bombadil can make Old Man Willow yield, but I wonder if the Willow would yield to a fellow Tree Shepherd or not.
It would depend on if Old Man Willow was truly evil or if he just hated those he viewed as "tree haters" and simply...
In LoTR, Gandalf said that Treebeard was the oldest living thing on Middle Earth.
Treebeard also said that the Elves woke them up.
Bombadil said that he was in Middle Earth before even the first acorn.
In Morgoth's Ring, p. 52, in the year 1500 VY, it says that 'there was a great growth...
"Treebeard lifted two great vessels and stood them on the table. They seemed to be filled with water; but he held his hands over them, and immediately they began to glow, one with a golden and the other with a rich green light..."
And later when he got upset talking about Saruman:
"Treebeard...
What is the 'Great Darkness' of which he speaks?
He says that the shadow of the Great Darkness has not been lifted from all of the forests. He talks of ents becoming like trees, and trees like ents. Who can explain Old Man Willow?
Where are Tasarninan, Nan-Tasarion, Taur-na-neldor...
I can’t help but wonder about this.
In the Director’s commentary of TTT, Peter Jackson said he got a few complaints in reviews that Treebeard was slow and boring. He admitted that the song of the Entwives in the film was a “celebration of the fact that he was dull”, an attempt to make it...
I'm not quite sure about this. It seems to me I've read some things in LOTR that make this unclear. Let me see if I can dig up some quotes..
(Bombadil, speaking about himself in FOTR)
(Gandalf, talking about Treebeard in TTT)
They both seemed to be described as the oldest living...
I've just seen H Potter 2,
and found these two "characters" much more convincing than their near-equivalents in FOTR.
Dobby is more "rounded" and realistic than Gollum who looks as if he has been drawn in;
the WW is more solid and imposing than the bundles of sticks that seem to make up the ents.
This is a ridiculous question but Bombadil said he was eldest, which is basically the only knowledge we have about what he is, but why then did Gnadlaf say that Treebeard was eldest?
I'm definately saying Cirdan. I assume that he awoke at Cuiveinen and is the oldest living thing in ME.
And anyway, Treebeard says it was the elves that came first, and educated the ents, and saved them from stupidity.
P.S. What made the Ents? I'm going to assume the Valar Yavanna did...
This is from the card game, which is ussually representative of the images in the movie. What do you think? Looks awesome in my opinion. Of course the way he is portrayed will depend on the script, but at least he's not laughable by the looks. More then I can say for Bakshi's attempt... :)...
Hi all,
Sorry if this topic has already been discussed, but has anyone got any news of what Treebeard will look like in the next installment of the LOTR?
I know earlier in the year people were anxious to get a glimpse of a picture of Treebeard, but as the CGI work on the film will take...
Who is the oldest?
There is a contradiction as to who is the oldest creature on ME is. Here are a couple of quotes from 'The Lord of the Rings':
On the next page it says:
These are the words of Elrond and Glorfindel. Later in the novel(s) Gandalf the White after being found for the...
