They very nature of making a film is far more complex than writing a book, or ensuring a car has no scratches.
Also, the film industry is often casual about errors, because only nitpickers tend to spot them.
There are some mistakes in movies that are sometimes inexcusable ( like Legolas' line in TTT: "They're heading North-east, they're taking the hobbits to Isengard". Isengard was North-west....
All right so films are harder to make than books or cars, but these films also had much more money available that could have been spent on more careful checking. If books and cars aren't good enough analogies, then why is it NOT too difficult to produce a plane that doesn't have bits dropping off it all the time? Surely it can't be more difficult and complex to make a film than to build a plane?
You admit film is more casual about errors, but it's a feeble excuse to say that is because only awkward viewers are likely to spot them. It also conflicts with what film-maker PJ himself says: for example he proudly devoted a huge amount of attention to the minute details of runes, that neither nit-pickers nor anyone else would ever have been likely to see.
It's wrong anyway to say that only nit-pickers see PJ's blunders: how could anyone miss the fact that a cave is full of barrels one minute and there are none there the next?
And if you're looking for nit-pickers, I don't think you need look further than home: surely you're kidding when you say that a change of compass point is "inexcusable"!

I've said before: PJ's throws his blunders full in your face - there's no need to look for them.

I heard that one of the mistakes there was a car, does anyone know what point it was at if you even do see one.

That's going to be fixed on the Extended Edition, I believe.

I said that one is inexcusable because it could have easily have been avoided, surely it's not that hard to just say "North-west"? They do show maps of ME in the movie, so even someone who hasn't read the books coud figure out they'd be going in the wrong direction.

They may as well have just said that Mordor was in the West...

Yep, in the theatre version of FotR there was a car in the background of the scarecrow field scene ( when Sam says "this is the farthest away from home I've ever been" )...it got edited out on DVD though. I think you can still see it on the music documentary on the EE.

You really expect me to believe there are 100 super-obvious mistakes in FotR and TTT? I don't think so. Some are quite obvious, but the reason you find more is because you look harder.

I mean, what are the odds of finding more mistakes in a longer movie that has less of them, and finding less errors in a shorter movie that has more of them? :p

Of course I agree with you, and just hope you don't mind that this classifies you, as well as me,
as a nit-picker. By the way, even those maps aren't accurate - there was a posting a while back pointing out an obvious blunder - why couldn't they just take a photo-copy of the book maps?!
And, are you saying all the rest of the blunders ARE excusable, because they could NOT have easily been avoided? How difficult is it to spot that a cave is full of barrels one minute and they've disappeared the next, that Merry and Pippin intermittently change in height, etc, etc.?

I've never offered a number, as I've certainly never counted!
In any product costing $300million, half a dozen "super-obvious" mistakes would be "inexcusable".

Dagorland? :p

I think some of those are as a result of scenes being taken out to be returned back to the Extended Edition in November ( I know the barrels scene probably is ). As for Merry and Pippin, I think that's likely to be explained by Ent Draught. It's interesting to see how the Extended Edition has gone from being just a special version with a few interesting scenes to the actual story, and the theatrical edition the incomplete one...

Well actually when I watched FOTR I hadn't read the books, so I was totally lost in conversations. But then I finished reading them and I started to see some mistakes.....Now I don't feel left out. But some of the changes were not so drastic though... They were beareable(Sp. It hinhk) *Jeesss Im gonna have to carry a dictionary*:p

Nops, I really didn't notice it. I usually don't pay attention to that kind of deatails when I watch movies. I'll try to spot it whenever I watch it again...
