in on fairy stories tolkien talks of the sorts of tales he liked as a lad, and we hear of his merely lukewarm interest in Carroll's Alice and in pirates; he then says "Red Indians were better: there were bows and arrows ... and strange languages, and glimpses of an archaic mode of life, and, above all, forests in such stories." what tales of Indians was he reading? Fenimore Cooper of course comes to mind. Are there other such tales that you folks know or guess were available to him? ( he was born of course in 1892)
