Haradrim soldiers, 📔book vs movie

[herlig9]

I dont think or remember how they were described in the book. But looking up online they seem to resemble Africans. Whereas in movie, they changed them to look more middle eastern (Probably due to the message of anti war due to the aftermath of 9/11 at the time)

But from a Europe centric view, this story does make lot of sense. Since if you are the underdog. Then wanting power at all costs makes sense, so its why they fell to Mordor influence. I think this could happen to anyone if they are underdogs in any situation. But of course, some take this the wrong way.

Either case, i think the message is very good from the book. Though in the book it was Sam who said it this quote in the video, not Faramir.

But curious to your view on it?

I always pictured in my mind from reading the books that 'the Haradrim' resembled Middle Eastern/South Asian folk. This was further divided and became my head-depiction of 'Near Haradians' when I read of the "Easterlings with axes, and Variags of Khand, Southrons in scarlet, and out of Far Harad black men like half-trolls with white eyes and red tongues" passage in the book. I didn't see Far Haradians as 'trolls' but big muscular black men whose size were troll-like in comparison.

So then I started to head-depict Haradians as many tribes and clans, which I sort of did with the Easterlings as well, who I head-pictured more Mongol/Cossack. For some reason, and there is no real description of them that I am aware of other than the part in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields chapter quoted above, I saw the Variags of Khand as more Asiatic and somewhat like Samuri.

There is probably a better thread to discuss all this in...
