Good day Tolkien Forum members,
I am a student researcher looking to generate some sample-based data on attitudes toward The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power, respecting those of you who have seen teaser trailer which Amazon recently released.
The survey itself should take about 5 minutes to complete. It consists of three parts:
(#1): Pre-survey demographic information- which, of course, will not be distributed beyond my own research;
(#2): Basic knowledges of The Lord of The Rings- Purely on a fundamental level, do not expect in-depth questions pertaining to Middle-earth lore, but if you wish, feel free to address this in the set text response questions.
(#3): Expectations of The Rings of Power- Which could be discussed in terms of product and story content, faithfulness to Tolkien's legacy, or anything else that may be on your mind.
In reward for taking the survey, I will post the multiple choice results once the survey period is over (2 weeks from now, may be longer depending on how many of you decide to take the survey). The results will also be taken down from the third-party website (Qualtrics) when the survey period is complete. That said, you have my utmost gratitude if you decide to take the survey.
SURVEY LINK: CLOSED ~ results soon.
If you have any further questions, I will try my best to respond.
EDIT:
#############RESULTS#############
Thanks to everyone who partook in the survey, although there weren't enough responses to generalise the data in as much detail as I'd hoped (not adequately reflecting The Tolkien Forum as a whole, but rather, the very few members (<20) who completed the survey), below is a summary results, as promised.
On a scale of 1 to 10, How much do you know about The Lord of The Rings story and lore? (self-assessed) Mean score of: 8.
Which sources do you receive most of your story content and lore knowledge from? 45.5% received from books. 18.18% each received from films, Tolkiens unfinished works, and browsing The Tolkien Forum.
Where do you go to find out information about The Lord of The Rings products?
1. Consumer reviews. (latter questions indicated consumer reviews were received from the internet; News articles, YouTube, etc.)
2. Critical reviews, news websites, and personal connections.
3. Film databases.
Which area of Tolkien's work, and adaptations are most compelling to you in terms of personal enjoyment? Ordered:
1. The Silmarillion. (21.74%)
2. The Lord of The Rings books/ The hobbit book (17.39%/17.39%)
3. The Lord of The Rings films/ The Children of Hurin (13.04%/13.04%/)
4. Unfinished Tales/ The History of Middle Earth (8.7%/8.7%)
5. The Hobbit film. (0%)
If you had to pick between the books and the films, which would you prioritise? 100% Books to 0% films.
What elements are most important to you regarding future works featuring Tolkien's middle earth? The results for this particular question weren't easily discernible, although emerging patterns were apparent.
1. Respect of originality.
2. The Writing.
3. Mixed.
4. Overall value of production
5. Actors/ and themes.
All participants thus far had seen The Rings of Power teaser trailer.
Unsurprisingly, optimism was split between COMPLETELY DEVASTATED and SOMEWHAT DEVASTATED. No participants selected hopeful, somewhat optimistic, or extremely optimistic.
Again, thanks to those who filled out the survey- and mods for allowing me to conduct it on this forum (archive or lock this post when you see fit).
