Tolkien starts The Two Towers with the death of Boromir, ending The Fellowship of the Ring with Frodo and Sam crossing the Anduin. Peter Jackson includes the death of Boromir in the first film. I think this was the right decision given the time between the release of the first two films. The three parts of the trilogy were published a few months apart but I believe Tolkien intended there to be a single volume edition (?).
One of the better images from the films is that of Frodo and Sam making their way to Mordor at the end of TFOTR.
