This is from an essay by Charles E. Noad, entitled "On the Construction of 'The Silmarillion'", from the collection Tolkien's Legendarium: Essays on the "History of Middle Earth".

"Finally, we arrive at this outline for "The Silmarillion" as Tolkien may have intended it:

Quenta Silmarillion
Concerning the Powers:
Ainulindale
Valaquenta

The Great Tales:
The Lay of Leithian
Narn i Chin Hurin
The Fall of Gondolin
Earendil the Wanderer

The Later Tales:
Akallabeth
Of the Rings of Power

Appendices:
The Tale of Years
Of the Laws and Customs among the Eldar
Dangweth Pengoloo
Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth
Quendi and Eldar

I found it interesting, and I wish that I could post the entire 40 page essay, where he traces the history of The Silmarillion so that everyone could see his reasoning, and the impressive depth of his resarch and knowledge of the HoMe. Regardless, I'd be interested to see what the learned sages here think of Mr. Noad's list.

Which Ainulindalë do you mean? The round earth version or the flat one?
