In the last few weeks I have read multiple books that at one point or another concerned themselves with negative criticism of Tolkien's Works, especially the Lord of the Rings, and all of these Books went out of their way to prove these critics wrong. Sometimes it seemed the critics didn't even read the book they were criticizing. As a fan of Tolkien I kept nodding along in agreement with the authors that dismantled such criticism. But of course what I got was a selected arrangement of critical opinions pieced together by authors who were writing in favour of Tolkien and admire his work, and it lies nigh at hand, that they haven't picked Tolkien's best critics that not only accuse him of escapism and move on but that made thoroughly clear why they didn't like (certain parts of) the Lord of the Rings or other works by Tolkien and made at least a good argument as of why. Do you know of any reviews, articles or maybe even books, whose author is well acquainted with Tolkien's works and yet displays a negative/critical opinion of them?
