My 3-year-old grandson is staying with us for the weekend. He spotted a jar of pennies on my dresser (that I'm actually collecting for him, since they will no longer be minting 1-cent pieces here in the U.S.) and asked, "May I have a penny?" I picked out the shiniest one I could easily reach and handed it to him. He carried it around for awhile and showed it to his grandma.
An hour later he's playing with his Brio train and I asked him, "Where's your penny?" He looked around, and looked at me like he had no idea what I was talking about.
And I thought, THAT'S what would happen to the Ring, if they had given it to Bombadil.
I was reading My Friends: A Novel and in it is this brief conversation.
Louisa looks up and tucks her hair away from her eyes.
"Even shorter than you? Seriously? What are you, hobbits?"
"I..., " Ted begins, feeling a little insulted, but she quickly explained,
"I mean, hobbits are people in The Lord of the Rings; they're really short!"
"Thanks, I know what hobbits are," Ted sighs.
You made me look that thing up. I wanted to know how on earth a flower was only named after The Lord of the Rings has been published, and it turns out that if you are an absolute enthusiast in crossbreeding and genetically altering flowers you can register your specific mix with the Royal Horticultural Society which has an Index of these Plants. Specifically they have an Orchid Register which lists "The key influencing species of this hybrid are Brassia gireoudiana (37.50%), Brassia arcuigera (25.00%) and Brassia verrucosa (12.50%)"
There are different varieties of the same plant with Okika being one of them and the other being called Bratonia ShelobTolkien. Could one make a similar but much bigger one and call it Bratonia Ungoliant? Preferably not planted next to trees you still want to enjoy.
I had a bit of a Tolkien Moment yesterday. As I am getting married this August, my friends organized a surprise Bachelors Party, which was LotR-themed. I got to be the ringbearer (obviously) while they were my fellowship that sent me on different quests throughout the day. We had a blast.

I thought this was so funny. Was reading my Bible a few nights ago (book of Isaiah) and I saw the word "Telessar". What could that possibly have brought to mind? 😍
