I'd say the White spotted tussock moth is an exact match, except that it was eradicated from Auckland in 1996.

I think it would have been extremely moving and would have characterized Tolkien's themes perfectly if Jackson had substituted the Huorns with this
geranium. Probably would have been cheaper too; then he could have spent more money on Warg and Oliphaunt battles.

Better if it were a red geranium; I can just see it - the blood mingling with the petals as they squish the orcs with their hairy leaves. Horrible!

You can cut the cast list down still further. Mouth of Sauron? Such a small part - what about a talking budgie? It could be made to look menacing by the addition of a studded collar and some rakish claws - CGI can do anything these days.

Apart from the minor detail of the colour that geranium looks more like a moth than PJ's moth looks to me like a moth.

And I still call them Marathons also.

No, no, no...it would have to be pink! It is symbolic of the smallest, least likely creatures banding together to fight evil; it demonstrates how nature will rise up to defeat the Machines of Industry. Come to think of it, it would have been even better to have the Orcs driving into Helm's Deep with tanks and THEN getting squashed by geraniums. I think the Academy would have awarded Jackson an honorary Oscar for "Superb Symbolism in a Motion Picture", and the Rotten Tomatoes and imdb.com ratings would have increased literally by percentage points.
