Where did Wormtongue come from?

Simply stated, Was he a dunlending, rohirrim or is nothing said of his past?

If he was a Rohhirim, he would be tall and fair faced, much like he isnt described in the book. Im guessing he is a Dunlanding... Good question

I'd presume that he was a well groomed wild-man from Dunland

For some reason, I think he was of the people of Rohan. He wouldn't have become so high in his lord's favour if he was any other "race" perhaps.

He was a Northman of Rohan. During the time of the War of the Ring, Gríma Wormtongue was the deformed chief counsellor of King Théoden of Rohan. (Taken from "Tolkien : The Illustrated Encyclopedia" by David day)

I think Wormtongue's real name, Grima, suggests that he was one of the Rohirrim, but probably of mixed parentage. I agree that he would not have been able to rise so high in the King's favor if he had simply been a Dunlending.
