Why are critics harder on The Two Towers?

I think the critics are much easier with TTT. The fotr got a-, while ttt got a. Maybe rotk will get a+!

I think that TTT fell short of expectations because it lacked the catharsis of Boromir's death. I think PJ tried to force that same effect with Sam's "let's win one more for the Gaffer" speech. It reminded me of one of Kyle's moral-of-the -story speeches at the end of a Southpark episode.

"You see, I think we've all learned something here today. And that is that we should all be able to get along in the world--men, orcs, wargs, dwarves, even that guy who likes raw rabbitses and fisheses. And who needs a silly old ring anyway. 'Cause we've got each other. Besides, Cartman's already got too much authoritah. And remember, the last person through the bogs, turn out the lights."

I humbly suggest that TTT is an inferior film to FOTR.

following 2 storylines at once can't be easy, especially as there is not any interaction between them.

In TTT, things "just happened" a lot more than in FOTR.. no explainations or reasonings, just stuff happening. Kind of reminded me of the way Star Wars films tend to play out.

Trouble is... "just happens" is not as good, ever, no matter how pretty is all looks.

I think PJ was going more maximum drama, and a constant streams of high and low points, which tends to be distracting and confusing after a while.
