Why did 🧝Elrond have to leave Middle Earth?

Technically, he was granted immortality, choosing to be like the Elves, but as he wasn't full Elf (but also not full Man), was it possible he could have stayed in Middle Earth forever without either dying (like Men) or fading (like Elves)?

In my opinion Elrond would fade bodily if he chose to stay in Middle-earth too long. We know that his choice gave him the physical longevity of an Elf, which, for Elves at least, is connected to the spirit. . .

. . . so I'm going to guess his spirit would someday begin to consume him, again, if he stayed in Middle-earth.

Anyway, I think my guess is not impossible ;)
