From HoME V, The Lost Road. Quenta Silmarillion:
But Maidros begged forgiveness for the desertion in Eruman, and gave back the goods of Fingolfin that had been borne away in the ships; and he waived his claim to kingship over all the Gnomes.
Was it necessary for Maidros to waive his claim to the kingship? I think that perhaps the other Gnomes could have accepted him as king, but would it have made a difference?

Well, I think that his refusal of the Kingship was an act of good will and repentance for what his father did to Fingolfin's host.

If he had taken the Kingship, would the other Noldor have acknowledged it? Would they be forced to by hereditary law?

I think Maedhros would have made a good High King (just as Fingolfin & co were perfectly good kings), unless the Oath came rearing its ugly head some time during his reign, and made him do something foolish.

I think Fingolfin and his eldest son were as prudent as circumstances allowed. I would say it is unfair to call Fingolfin imprudent because he rushed off to challenge Morgoth, since he had received a vision beforehand of how hopeless the war against Morgoth had been, and would be, without the aid of the Valar. That was just ONE instance of 'imprudence', if you want to call it that, though it cost him his life.
