For “The Hobbit” to have its own significant culture and be different from the rest, J.R.R Tolkien wanted to give the Dwarves their own recognition. Tolkien began to develop a new culture that only the Dwarves would follow and understand. Hence runic alphabets were put into play which was created by J.R.R Tolkien himself. The Dwarf Runes were a secret classified script used by the Dwarves. It was also their main writing style. This particular style of writing found among the Dwarves mostly involved runes and glyphs (Writing With Dwarf Runes). The Dwarf Runes were first created way back by the elven loremaster Daeron of Doriath and were initially called Cirth or Certar Daeron. The Tengwar script of Fëanor inspired Daeron and wanted to have his very own script for his Sindar fellowmen. The dwarves picked up the runes from the elves. The letters are simple and narrow. The Cirth alphabets consisted of originally nineteen letters. Noidor and Eregion were determined to make it easier and have letters to match the sounds in their own language, hence adding new letters into the script, and this expansion is referred to as Angerthas Daeron and Angerthas Eregion. After the downfall of Eregion, the elves discarded the use of Cirth.
While the Dwarves made a few changes and variations of the same and renamed it Angerthas Moria and Angerthas Erebor. The changes and addition of new ways that were implemented into this script did not end here. The dwarves developed a new secret way of penning down runes that were referred to by them as Moon Letters. The reason behind naming it Moon Letters was that the runes were pen down with a silver pen and due to a particular characteristic of the ink found in the silver pen, the writings were only seen under the light of the moon. Even as we see in the Lord of the Rings movies, Erebor and Moria's styles are implemented on Bolin’s tomb. The movies show us exactly how the letters look like and introduce viewers to the ancient scripts that were created by Tolkien centuries ago.
