War of the Last Alliance

The opposing forces in this war were Sauron's army and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. The main reason that caused the battles to happen was Sauron's threat to conquer. The war itself had four definite stages and went on for twelve years.

Significance

King Elendil's host is known as the most meaningful unit ever collected in the Middle-earth from the Gathering of Valinor throughout the War of Wrath. It joined forces with The High King of the Noldor, Gil-galad. Previously, his army united forces with the woodland realm under King Oropher. Combined from all these armies, The Last Alliance occupied all the Free Peoples of the world. Together, supporting one leader, they formed the most notable military company to ever assemble and fight the only war this size, till the War of the Ring had occurred. That was the last time the Elven People managed to unite in such a manner. We have never again seen the Elves in battle, with an army as big as that one.

Dwarves

Some sources considered that not a lot of dwarves participated in battles on either side. However, Longbeards fought alongside Elves and Men. Also, throughout the War of the Last Alliance, Durin IV was the King of Durin's Folk. He sent a large army to help the alliance in battles.

Historys

Preludes

Elendil and Gil-galad led the Last Alliance against the Orks in the Battle of Dagorlad. They both took two years to gather their forces. Elendil and his oldest son Isildur met with Gil-galad and led their armies from Amon Sul on Weathertop to Rivendell. That is where they joined Elrond and his army of Elves. The next three years they spent making plans, training, and forging weapons to use in the grand war that was following. That is from where the nickname "The Great Forge" comes.

Conflicts

Battle Of The Last Alliance.Battle Of The Last Alliance.
While the armies were going South, along the River Anduin, many Elf armies joined them, starting with the host of Oropher, the king of Greenwood, and Amdir, the king of Lorien. Later, Isildur's younger brother Anarion and his company of Numenoreans from Gondor and a host of Dwarves of Khazad-dum joined. They were heading for the homeplace of Entwives, Fangorn forest. Unfortunately, a battle happened before their arrival. The Dark Lord ordered a unit to go before them and wipeout Entwives, who are considered extinct after this event. The fields of Dagorlad is where the Last Alliance concluded Sauron's biggest strength. That is why it is considered the most important battle that took place. It was a triumph for Elves and Men, but the alliance also suffered many losses. Firstly, kings Amdir and Oropher. They weren't satisfied with the way Gil-galad, the High King of the Noldor, was leading the battle and decided to charge. It turned out to be a premature attack and a mistake that led to their and deaths of many more Silvan Elves, Men, and Elves. Oropher's men collapsed in the face of Morannon, better known as The Black Gate. After being driven back to the Dead Marshes, Amdir and his host got murdered.

Frodo and Sam later found their preserved bodies in the Marshes when they went by it with Gollum. After this action, the army of Elves and Men, lead by Gil-galad and Elendil, threw down the Black gate. This event caused the Siege of Barad-Dur to began. The siege would last for seven years. Throughout these battles, Elendil's son, Anarion, was lord of Minas Anor at the time. He and his army battled their way to the gates of Barad-Dur with no help from other hosts. Unfortunately, during these battles, Anarion was stopped by a rock, fired for a catapult from the top of Barad-Dur. After Anarion died, the soldiers went under the command of Elendil and joined the other hosts. The begging of the end came when the Dark Lord himself went into action and fought Gil-galad. Elendil joined Gil-galad in warfare, but they both fell. Even though they didn't survive, their armies were able to overthrow Sauron and take him down. During that exact hour, Isildur struck the One Ring from Sauron's finger, thus separating his spirit. The Last Alliance's name was "of Elves and Men " but, the writer of the books, J.R.R. Tolkien, noted that all creatures came to action at that time. Even beasts and birds and all living races and all were fighting on both sides, but the Elves. They were all faithful to Gil-galad.

Aftermaths

Sauron's defeat is named the end of the Second Age and the beginning of the Third Age. After the battle, a lot of notable things occurred. Isildur, the eldest son of Elendil, became the High King of the Dunedain. After Gil-galad passed away, there was no one left in line to take the crown of the High Kings of the Nolder. With no one left with the authority to claim them, the titles of King of Lindon and High King of the Elves in Middle Earth ended up abolished. Also, Thranduil and Amroth became kings. Their fathers' deaths left them next in line with the claim to Greenwood and Lothlorien. The One Ring was lost three years later at the Gladden Fields, the battle where Isildur died. The One Ring disappeared in a stream for the next 2500 years. In the meantime, the Dark Lord was hiding someplace in the Eastern areas, growing his name as the Necromancer.

Portrayal in Adaptations

Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Rings

Last Alliance, LoTR: The Fellowship of the Ring.Last Alliance, LoTR: The Fellowship of the Ring.
Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, [1] in many ways, is different from the text above. Whether it is changing the characters' weapons or just cutting out some scenes, the movies are different. For example, the elves went to battle with falxes(curved swords managed with two hands), and Sauron fought with an enormous mace. The initial idea included Sauron and Gil-galad's combat in which, after Gil-galad falls, Sauron seizes him by the throat. The fire from Sauron's hand then causes the Elf-lord to go into flames. Yet, the moviemakers decided to cut this scene. The rest of the exhibition is in the movie. Elendil tries to retaliate for Gil-galad, then a blast of energy comes from Sauron's weapon, launches him against some stones. Isildur hurries to save his injured father, but he dies in his hands. After realizing there is no way he can salvage his father's life, Isildur tries to grab Narsil.

His father's saber, and attack the approaching Sauron. The Dark Lord stands on the sword, causing it to break into pieces. When Sauron tries to grab and pick him up, Isildur uses the handle to cut off Sauron's fingers, along with his right index, which carried the One Ring. Sauron's life is connected to the One Ring, so cutting it off caused a lot of energy to fill his armor. Je explodes from all the energy going into him. A massive shockwave occurs, everybody falls from the power of the blast. Sauron's body and spirit disappear. The movie never mentions some essential characters. Cirdan and Anarion are eliminated. Gil-galad never gets identified by name, but you could recognize him viciously murdering an orc using his spear. In the novel, Isildur consults both Elrond and Cirdan to crush the Ring. But in the movie, Cirdan is not present when Elrond takes Isildur to the Crack of Doom to destroy the Ring after the battle. Isildur declines and leaves.
