Tom, Bert, And William

On his mission to get Erebor into his hands again, Bilbo Baggins went to Trollshaws, Eriador. He was with the company of Thorin and some fellows. There, he met Stone trolls William, Bert, and Tom. Described as thieves and wanderers, they were also murderers. This was common amongst most trolls who were not from Mordor. The only entity that could banish them was sunlight. Once it touches them, they become solid as gravel. This was through Gandalf's power.

William had a small pouch of money with him. It gave him an alert as Bilbo attempted to act as if he was stealing it. This was a way to check his cleverness in a theft. Afterward, the trolls captured him. He almost admitted that he was a thief. However, he told them he is a hobbit (bur). The trolls thought he was a burrahobbit. Thorin and the dwarves searched for Bilbo. The trolls ambush and sack Thorin and his companions. After then, the trolls planned to murder and eat them. Yet, Gandalf came to the rescue. He imitated how the trolls sounded. This sparked an argument among them. He was able to manage the situation by leaving them fighting. They argued on how to make food out of the dwarves. The next morning, the sun was out and they became stone. It was too late for them to run away. This led to Thorin and his fellow's discovery of the troll's cave. There are 4 hobbits in the story: Peregrin Took, Mariadoc Bandybuck, Samwise Gamgee, and Frodo Baggins. Aragorn went with them to Rivendell. Along the way, they saw the concrete trolls. For a while, these seemed like live beings. Frodo remembers the trolls fighting about cooking a hobbit and over a dozen elves. This was a good chance before the elves turned into stone. Facts say that the argument was only regarding how to manage to eat the dwarves. At that particular moment, Bilbo ran away while the fight was going on. He covered himself with the bushes around him. Tolkien must have mistaken this. Yet, there is a possibility that Frodo has also forgotten what exactly happened.

As for the type of Trolls, there is a misperception. Some mention that they were Stone Trolls. Many wiki page contents mention specific Troll kinds of the three.

The ZX Spectrum version of The Hobbit shows the two trolls. Most likely, this was the licensed initial version. According to some sources, this could be because of the slow capacity of old data processors. Also, the game version includes Thorin but not the group of dwarves.

Kili, Fili, and Bilbo had an encounter with the trolls in the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. [1] The trolls took the dwarves’ donkeys. Bilbo attempts to free the animals while Kili and Fili stay aside. The trolls capture Bilbo. They say they would destroy Bilbo then they defeat the dwarves. The dwarves are then thrown into sacks. Fifty percent of them are put into skewers then onto the fire. Thorin, Bilbo, and the rest are still in the sacks. Gandalf lurks as Bilbo talks about cooking methods with the hideous trio. He did this as a distraction but does not work. Tom then tries to devour Bombur in the flesh. Bilbo says that the dwarves have worms in their gut. He did this to stop them from getting eaten up. William and the trolls did not believe. Gandalf then shows up.

The surprised trolls think they could eat him too. There was a big stone that served as the cover of the trolls. A sorcerer in the story divides a rock into two using his stick. However, as the sunlight creeps, they become stone. Thus, releasing the group. Both Gandalf and Thorin think that the trio did not go this far down Ettenmoors. This was impossible when the evil power conquered the area from the Second era. The Battle of Middle Earth games involve the trolls. One could find them in the Weather Top multiplayer map. Farther on the right near a stream, one could see the horrified trolls. Mark Hadlow, William Kircher, and Peter Hambleton played the roles of the trolls. This was at the beginning of the film. The same cast portrayed Dori, Gloin, and Bifur in the movie series.

Bilbo verifies his tale of meeting the trolls to some hobbit-children. This was on his one hundred and eleventh natal day gathering. This is in Peter Jackson's initial movie of the three films of the Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). [2] The longer version tells that right after the wounding of Frodo, the trolls appear. This was before Arwen came escorting Frodo to Rivendell. However, the trolls become stone. Sam points the three to Frodo informing them that they were Mr. Bilbo's maulir. There was no mention as to how Gandalf made the trolls into stone when exposed to the sun. Bilbo, together with the dwarves, are set free.

Gene Deitch's movie describes the trolls as green creatures. They are in dirtier clothing compared to the version of Peter Jackson.

In the film, [3] the trolls seem stocky and tall. They wear hats with their colored attire. Facial features include ungroomed brows, long beards, and large noses. One of the three seem like a one-eyed Jack with long, sharp teeth.

Trollshaws shows the horrifying trolls in the LEGO [4] The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game. This is also true in The Lord of the Rings Online game. They appear too in the vast area of Eregion as seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. The same is true in the LEGO The Hobbit: The Video Game.
