Who do you like best? Aragorn, 🧝Legolas or Gimli?

And who would you be on the journey?

This is a book-only question, I take it?

If so, and if you're also limiting it to the journey of the Three Hunters, I'd very much choose to be Legolas, by virtue of his unflagging stamina.

I can't speak to "liking", as my interest in stories doesn't lie in that direction -- though I will say that L&G are minor characters: Tolkien himself said that Legolas was the "most ineffective" of the Fellowship.

In the book, Gimli.
I find Aragorn a little arrogant at times and Legolas a little bland, so Gimli wins by default.

Who would I be on the journey? Merry
(Yes I know I'm supposed to choose from the three hunters, but I just wouldn;t be any of them. I'd be Merry)

Did Tolkien mention that about Legolas in one of his letters? an interview? an article?
I have his Letters ("The Letters of JRR Tolkien, ed by H . Carpenter) and have learned quite a lot about the man himself as well as the behind-the-scenes details about his works. But I have only read it selecrtively. Hence my question about the Legolas' relative ineffectiveness being mentioned (or not) in his letters.

It's from Unfinished Tales,

Elendil and Gil-Galad were partners; but this was "the Last Alliance" of Elves and Men. In Sauron's final overthrow, Elves were not effectively concerned at the point of action. Legolas probably achieved least of the Nine Walkers.

I see I misquoted slightly from memory. What he said was:
In Sauron's final overthrow, Elves were not effectively concerned at the point of action. Legols probably achieved least of the Nine Walkers.
Unfinished Tales, p. 395

Edit: I see EA posted while I was laboriously tapping this out on my phone. 😄

I'll just add that, from the standpoint of story structure, Legolas and Gimli are cast as archetypal "helpers of the hero", and so minor characters.

At least Elves seem(ed) to know what an Ent was. I'd like to be one of the other two, because it seems they need an education.

Aragorn is my favorite, hands down! He's probably my favorite LotR character in general, followed closely by Sam. His combination of gentleness and strength, his humility despite the importance of his ancestry and his title, the way he is both a warrior and healer... what's not to love?

As for which one of the three I'd be...
Tolkien himself said that Legolas was the "most ineffective" of the Fellowship.
If this is true, I'd be Legolas then. 😂 I know how to wear a pretty outfit and style my hair, but other than that I've got no skills that would be useful on a quest lol! At least Legolas can use a weapon and have basic survival skills, that's more than what I can do. 😂
