Rings of Power Season 2 news

Count me intrigued. I wasn't particularly impressed by Season 1, but I did eventually watch until the end. While plenty of the dialogue and acting in these trailers and in season 1 was cringe-worthy, every time I re-watch the LotR films I notice some new bit of cringe-worthiness that I didn't pick up on when I first watched in my youth, but that doesn't dilute my enjoyment. Therefore, as I'm not going into this season expecting any Oscar-worthy performances and fully expecting the show to take many creative liberties with the lore, I'll just try to enjoy it for what it is as I watch the show-runners attempt to bring one of my favorite fantasy worlds to life.

Why is this happening to me!!!

Or do you guys see it too?

But... but... but...
A "Tolkien Professor" has repeatedly said how knowledgeable, great and wonderful these showrunners are....

Tolkien had Elwing throw herself into sea with a silmaril. So *Elrond twice-oathbreaker casting himself into the sea with *Rings is completely Tolkien...

Which one, pray tell? 🤨

Can't recall his name, but I think he's
Tom Shippey's cousin, once removed.

Anyway. Looks painful -- Elrond's landing I mean! Maybe they should leave that kind of thing to us!

The "Tolkien Professor". The one who says:
'do you want to be true to what you think Tolkien was imagining...OR, do you want to be true to what Tolkien said about the world'
...then states that Tolkien never said Dwarf-women have beards; Tolkien does not describe his characters, we don't even know what colour Merry's hair is; the Rohirrim are descended of the Easterlings that entered Beleriand in the First Age (or their relatives); the palantiri are not mentioned in any version Numenor story; Galadriel and Celeborn repeatedly spent long periods of time apart in every version of their story (not just once but regularly); the name Annatar only appears in Unfinished Tales; LotR (book) Galadriel is dubious and questionable; etc...

That is Corey Olsen

Ohh. That guy. Maybe they could switch him
for people who have more film experience?

Who's the richest Olsen sister? Full House twins Mary-Kate and Ashley share a combined US$500 million fortune – but don't forget little sister, Marvel star Elizabeth | South China Morning Post

From the Wikipedia article:

"Olsen obtained his B.A. in English and astrophysics from Williams College in 1996. He went on to Columbia University, where he took all the medieval courses he could, obtaining his M.A. in 1997, his MPhil in 2000, and his PhD in medieval literature in 2003."

So PhD at age 28 or 29. Published in the academic journal "Tolkien Studies" (founded in 2004 by Douglas A. Anderson, Michael D. C. Drout, and Verlyn Flieger) in 2008 and 2009, then his book Exploring J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit in 2012. I suppose his work in the academic journal was peer-reviewed, and the book was given a positive if not enthusiastic review by Jason Fisher.
But the statements you quote are questionable, to say the least. PJ's film trilogy was complete the year he got his PhD, so perhaps he's more tolerant of discrepancies - able to separate book from film, as several of our members are capable of doing by their posts (my opinion of PJ's works has gone downhill in the last 20 years, but then I've gotten generally grumpier in the same period).

"In spring 2007, Olsen began The Tolkien Professor website ..."

This one puzzles me a bit, as the Tolkien Estate can be a bit "not amused" about the use of the family name, or used to be at that time.

He claims to have been quite the 'purist', back when PJ did his thing with LotR.
I do not know if he was, that is just what he has claimed.
I'd not ever heard of him until a few years ago.
What I have noticed, over the past couple years of watching some of his videos, is that when he makes errors, the errors are always in favour of Amazon, and it is very difficult to get him to correct them.

Well, Olsen started his Tolkien Professor website in 2007, and has become heavily involved in internet projects since then. I have the impression that the internet crowd has evolved a kind of "group think", "circling the wagons" when there is criticism of the internet, even though much of the criticism is justified to those whose perspective is not restricted by internet blinkers.

I expect to drink alcohol with, or without, seeing it.
and I hold no expectations whatsoever (to the extent it's entishly possible), always remembering "every frustration comes from an unfulfilled expectation. To avoid frustration, hold expectations loosely, or not at all."

Deucedly hard it is, to truly 'hold no expectations'.

I expect to be napping before seeing it; after seeing it; and sometimes during it. But as I don't want to be all negative in this thread: kudos to post 68!

And I do like the woman's golden cloak-clasp, even if it's not attested in canon.

We are joking... but...
A lot of good can became of his jump:
- He dies
- He saves the rings.. but dies
- He don't save the rings, but dies, Galadriel starts revenge mission

What I truly believe will happen is that Tom Bombandil will save him.
He will land on giant mooshroom..
Too bad Elrond doesn't know is Morgoth.
So, he will stay with Morgoth, while dwarfs will argue (with first female black dwarf), should they use the ring, and for some reason, we will never see someone offers the rings to dwarfs at all.
Meanwhile angry Galadriel will search for lost Elrond, encounter a Sauron, and Sauron tells her that he would rather be in a Void, with his master, then listen to...
Meanwhile, the hobbit girl arrives with Gandalf on eastern lands, and encounter Tom (wait, haven't we seem him way west and he saved Elrond??)...
- Ahahahaha - that's the whole trick you never expected... said Pain and Mcain... This is true Tom... the one we used in the west is Morgoth...
haha.. we got you!!!
Meanwhile Durin search for Elrond, by digging the hole... when Balrog appears, he curses him because he wasn't at his wedding. Balrog walks away ashamed.
Meanwhile, Galadriel finally found a body of Elrond, in the waterfall depths ... but is it a dead body, or a ring?
Galadriel quickly forgets her political friend, and puts the ring.
She realize the ring is evil, so she climbs up unto the waterfall, and explain to Gil Galad how it's evil. ....

... next please...

“Because of the nature of where the story has been so far, it’s been rather grim,” Payne says. Galadriel has had to be “like the Terminator or something. She’s just on a mission. But the character has a lot of other registers and tones that we are excited to play in—some of which you see in season 2, and some of which we’ve already started to think [for] season 3.”

On a mission. JRRT kept shifting that during the 18 years he had time to shoe-horn Galadriel into the First Age. But RoP cannot use that material.
Did anyone who saw season 1 figure out what that mission was? Might be interesting if you compared notes.
