"Do not be afraid!" said Aragorn. There was a pause longer than usual, and Gandalf and Gimli were whispering together; the others were crowded behind, waiting anxiously. "Do not be afraid! I have been with him on many a journey, if never on one so dark; and there are tales of Rivendell of greater deeds of his than any that i have seen.

Does anyone know what some of these great deeds might be? Well besides entering the dungeons of the Necromancer......

Thats a good question. I might think that it would have to do with some of Gandalf's deeds in Eriador before the Company of Adventures and so.

Well Gandalf had earned himself a name in the Far East. Meaning he had done deeds in the Far East. Maybe word travelled fast...

What did he do in the Far East? I wasn't even aware that he had ever gone there. I far as I know only Saruman and the Blue Istari went to the East, where does it say that Gandalf went there?

This was the little chant that Faramir told the Hobbits in the Henneth Annûn.

It says Gandalf doesn't go into the east...

From The Window in the West:

'Mithrandir we called him in elf-fashion,' said Faramir, 'and he was content. Many are my names in many countries, he said. Mithrandir among the Elves, Tharkûn to the Dwarves; Olórin I was in my youth in the West that is forgotten, in the South Incánus, in the North Gandalf; to the East I go not.'

There is no indication that Gandalf journeyed into the East or got any kind of name there. It is even doubtful that he went to the South:

At any rate it seems unlikely that he ever journeyed or stayed long enough in the Harad (or Far Harad!) to have there acquired a special name in any of the alien languages of those little known regions. The South should thus mean Gondor (at its widest those lands under suzerainty of Gondor at the height of its power). At the time of this Tale, however, we find Gandalf always called Mithrandir in Gondor (by men of rank or Númenórean origin, as Denethor, Faramir, etc.).

Therefore his "greater deeds" must be limited to "the Westlands from Gondor to Angmar, and from Lindon to Lórien" (UT; the Istari). I think it can only be assumed what these deeds were, and I would say that mostly he roused the hearts of all free peoples to courage, or maybe even battled some dreadful creatures of Morgoth. Who knows?
