So Gandalf shows up at the Baggins place and marks a door indicating to 13 dwarves "this is the place." As we read, we learn the dwarves had asked Gandalf to "find one more" for their party. Tolkien writes/speaks of this number "thirteen" 10 times in The Hobbit. I can't help but ponder...

I must have missed that part? Would that mean Frodo Baggins was 36-40 years old by the time Gandalf first visited. Then turned 50 when he left the Shire with the ring? However... timeline consistency feels weird here. I dunno. Can someone fact check me. My apologies...

My Fiancée crocheted Gandalf the Grey and I wanted to show him to you. He is now my travel companion and sits just behind my windscreen and accompanies me to various construction sites. In a few weeks time, he will be joined by Gimli.

The Color of Gandalf: Another Look Everyone remembers: Gandalf the Grey, who falls, then returns as Gandalf the White. But almost no one asks: Why white? Why not: Silver? Light? Star-cloaked? Dawn-robed? Valar-gold? The secret is because white in Middle-earth isn’t just a color. It is a...

That part has confused me how he resisted despair and chose to fight when it looked like Mordor had captured Frodo and Sam. Assuming that Frodo had stuck the Ring up his rear end or something and that's why Sauron didn't already have the Ring, it would seem the best course of action to get...

Lets discuss some theories. When Gandalf returns, Tolkien writes him to be virtually indistinguishable from Gandalf the Grey. (Except for those few close to him, who notice some small differences in his behavior, and his character.) He is not recognized as different in Rohan. He is not...

Hello everybody. I'm new here and I need opinions about this tattoo I want to know. I know that would be better use Tolkien's illustrations, but i really like that. Do you think I should to do other thing, or is this one respectiful ?

Do we have reasons for the tight lips of Gandalf when it comes to discussions about the West? Wouldn't it be advantageous to spread the story of Eru and the Valar? Was it a decision of Eru that creation be left a mystery to Middle Earth? Could it be that the Valar saw what happened when the men...

Just watched the lotr for the umpteenth time. Extended versions of course. I have the books on order. I'm an avid reader so don't know myself why I have yet to read them. Anyway, just wondered what peoples thoughts were on Gandalf, being as powerful as he is.....why does he not use magic in the...

In reviewing some things related to terminology, I bumped across this statement by Gandalf again. I would like your input/clarification for my befuddled brain, please. "“’A Ring of Power looks after itself…It may slip off treacherously, but its keeper never abandons it. At most he plays with...

In the chapter "The Shadow of the Past" Gandalf tells Frodo how he "put the fear of fire on him" to get information about the One Ring. The full quote is below: I have seen it opined a few times that this means that Gandalf actually used fire on Gollum's body. I am of the opinion that Gandalf...

Gandalf, recounting his fight with the Balrog, talks about tunnels dug up by unnamed creatures that neither him nor Sauron know about. The second time I read the LOTR books (recently, with more attention) this passage legitemely sent a chill down my spine. So I wonder, does tolkien talk about...

I'm not asking why Gandalf chose Bilbo Baggins to be a Burglar, as he may have had good enough reason to do that. I'm asking why he would chose Mr. Baggins, a Burglar, over someone like Bard the Bowman, to go on the Smaug quest I mean, Bilbo could be a renowned burglar with a reputation for...

Is that something common for Wizards and mentioned in the books? Or was it one of PJ's artistic interpretations?

As seen in The Fellowship of the Ring: Is this quote also found anywhere in the books? 🤔

In The Ring Goes South it is Elrond who chooses the nine of the fellowship (acceding to Gandalf over Merry and Pippin) yet it is Gandalf who is the implicit leader, so shouldn't Gandalf be the one who chooses?

Thinking about Gandalf's fireworks I was wondering about how and where they are made. It could be that they were produced out of thin air by magic (creatio ex nihilo), but I prefer that he made them but infused them with power from his magic abilities, as bearer of the Ring of Fire. I suppose he...

In my recent work, I've needed to do a bit of research into "Gandalf" lore, "Ring" lore, and "Staff" lore... among other things. This particular post will address Gandalf and his staff most particularly. I'd like to lay out some thinking/findings so all of you can chew it to bits and refine my...

How come he is so overdramatic in 1977 cartoon?
