In the Council of Elrond (and elsewhere?) we learn that Radagast had left Mirkwood at that time, and is apparently an itinerant wizard on horseback like Gandalf. This is likely to be because of Sauron's move from Dol Guldur to Mordor, but is that reason given by Tolkien in any of his writings...

Opening up this discussion thread for anyone who might want to leave comments or ask questions regarding "The Broken Shield". A few Author's Notes and Background Info regarding this story and my writing in general: The majority of my Tolkien/Middle-earth fanfiction is uniformly anchored on...

The wiki on my man Legolegs says, The first sentence there probably indicates that there's no canon answer, and probably no indication in the notes of Tolkien. But if Legolas was sent to Rivendell to tell of the escape of Gollum from Mirkwood, that would imply that at the start of the War of...

My 11-year-old so has read The Hobbit and has recently started FOTR and the questions are rolling in. He loves the military aspects of Middle-earth and wanted to know who would win in a war the elves under Thraduril, or Elrond. He had clearly put a lot of thought into the question and he listed...

Was there any other war apart from the woodland realm war and the battle under the trees in the war of the ring? I read somewhere that there was another war before the battle under the trees. How many battles were lived in Mirkwood?

I don't think Shelob ever spoke in the book (though Gollum appeared to have some alliance with her, so maybe he at least figured out how to communicate with her), and I'm not sure if Ungoliant ever spoke to anyone but possibly Morgoth (who was a Valar and had near divine abilities, perhaps...

My question is would't the climate on the Wilderland be dry because it was east of the Misty Mountains. Could there really have been such a thick dense forest like Mirkwood ? I realive it's just a story. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Most other forums people just care...

Isn't it strange that an evil power would choose to reside in a forest of all places? What is more, we're talking about Sauron, a Maia of Aulë who had quite the disdain for the natural world to begin with. Why do you think he chose it?

(Legolas Fans!!!) ((I've decided to make a quest. All Legolas fans listen up! Mirkwood has been sieged and made into a fortress! the only person who Knows a lot about Mirkwood who isn't captive is Legolas who left M.E ( This involves sailing) we must get to him! Arten stumbled across the...

Occ: Post character, anyone can join. The elf sighed as he drew his bow, this was the seventh time this week an orc had strayed from Mordor. As he let the arrow fly a yell echoed through the forest, Castor ran through the forest dodging bushes and trees. His Obsidian longbow tucked at his...

I am reading The Sil right now, and in "Of Beleriand and its Realms" I came across a reference to something resembling the Mirkwood of The Hobbit: I was thinking that Ungoliant's offspring were the spiders in Mirkwood, and I likened the defouled waters to the river that Bombur fell into in...

I was just reading the bit where the dwarves are captured by the wood-elves. It seems to me that the Elves were unnecessarily cruel towards the dwarves, lighting the fires, and extinguishing them as soon as the dwarves appeared, then capturing them in the dark and jailing them at once. The...

Does it state the the Mirkwood elves are Sindar becasue they could be of the Laiquendi as they share more common traits. Perhaps even they are a migled peoples. Then again I vagely remember it being stated somewhere that the Elves of Mirkwood are of Sindarian descent (posible in the LotR where...

Who thinks that song is soooooo funny! Please reply! :p

And if so, what race is it?

There is this part in the Hobbit when the dwarves and Bilbo enter Mirkwood and they hear the horns of (presumably) a hunting party blowing....my question is:confused: :) so can any one enlighten me?? and one more thing....excuse this question, i know it might sound very stupid but i can't for...

Sauron’s first appearance after the Last Alliance is at Dol Guldur instead of Mordor- which someone might expect. Why do you think Sauron made such a decision? Did it eventually benefit him or not?

Were the wood elves too harsh on the dwarves when they caught them in Mirkwood? The king seemed a little rude & self centered to me. The only things he was interested in were his feast & any treasure he thought the dwarves might be going to find. What do u think?

Here's a question for you. When the dwarves were held captive in Mirkwood by the wood elves, Bilbo was wearing the ring the whole time, which was weeks. The necromancer or Sauron wasn't far down south in the same forest in Dol Gulder. His ring was in use, how come he didn't notice? is this a...

Sauron, referred to in 'The Hobbit' as the 'Necromancer' occupied Dol Guldur whilst Bilbo was in Mirkwood. Imagine if Sauron had captured Bilbo? He would have obtained the One Ring and LotR would have never taken place, except if it was the point of view of Sauron.
