Pippin threw a stone into a hole, and it alerted the orcs down there. If he hadn't done that, Orcs wouldn't have come. .. No balrog attack. .... Gandalf wouldn't have died.

They spoke the language of Gondor (whatever that is), which Pippin didn't speak. From the book it seems to me that he figured out from the conversations around him what was going on. It's unlikely that he learnt the language so quickly.

At first, I thought it was because of his infamous curiosity (like throwing a stone down that well), but I just read it and it said that something was almost compelling him to go get it. Was he hoodwinked by Sauron merely by touching the thing the first time or was it just his own imagination...

In the prologue, Bullroarer is listed as 4'5" tall, and we know Merry and Pippin was taller than he, but where is it listed that they were 4'6"? Is that an inference? Page numbers or chapters would be appreciated.

I find it very sad that PJ has decided to make M&P nothing more than Abbot and Costello for these movies. I felt that the over blowing of their idiocy (especially Pippin) in FoTR was to show the contrast from their impulsive immaturity to when they mature to responsible and heroic hobbits...
