Cold.
That was the only thing he could feel.
It could have various reasons. First,it was winter. People felt chilly during the winters. That could be a plausible reason.
But he was not one to be affected by weather so easily. He had had worst.
It could be the bloodloss. Your heart rate slowing as it pumped your veins empty of its content would definitely make you feel chilly.
Or it could be the unseeing eyes of his younger brothers, staring down at him,as if trying to look into his soul.
That was the most likely reason because you see; Tyelko had went through countless winters and deadly wounds. But he had never lost one of his brothers before tonight. And he had never experienced such bone-chilling cold in his entire life.
On his body laid the corpse of the child king. Another death he was responsible for. Another life taken in pursue of their light. To avoid the promise of an everlasting darkness.
But this time,it was a child's. An elfling to his eyes no matter how much mannish blood he possessed.
I have dropped too low, haven't I?
He thought bitterly.
As black spots darkened his vision, Tyelko allowed himself to wonder again. To wonder if all they had said and done were worth ...this?
Were the revenge of Finwë or the Silmarils of Fëanor worth the life of Curvo?Moryo? Father's?
His own?
Were they worth Nelyo's hand and his sanity?
Their long dead innocence?
And again and again,he came to the same conclusion.
No. It never was.
They had damned themselves. All of them. And there was no going back.
He could feel the pull of the oath weakening slowly. Was it the result of the jewel getting further away from him or his fading fëa he did not know. Nor did he care.
He only knew he was dying and it was not as scary as he thought it to be.
He would see Curvo again. And Moryo. And ...and atar. This thought alone made him feel at peace.
He just wished he didn't have to do it alone.
I wish I wasn't surrounded by dead bodies only...
Moryo and Curvo had each other towards the end. He could see their joined hands from this angle.
They were not alone. Not like him.
Mother had always said Eru was ever listening. Of their thoughts, words and deeds,he was ever watchful.
So he prayed. Something he hadn't done since leaving Valinor. Since he swore that damned oath on his name.
He never thought he'd care what he had to say.
All-father. I wish...wish to repent of all the evil I have done by your name. Please hear me one last time. Although undeserving I am,grant me this final request. Let me see what are left of my brothers. Do not let me succumb to this darkness alone.
No matter how earnest,he did not believe he would be listened to. Why would he,after all the innocent lives he had taken?
After tainting Eru's name with all his deeds?
So when he saw the tall, red-headed figure of his eldest brother approaching slowly,he thought him to be a figment of his own imagination. His mind's last desperate attempts of a peaceful death.
Maitimo's steps seemed heavy as he slowly walked towards their brothers' body. Was it grief weighting him down? regret? guilt? all of them?
He fell on his knees besides them before letting out a heart-wrenching scream.
Poor Maitimo. Always the one to take responsibility for whatever mess any of them made. No doubt thinking it to be his fault they were dead.
Tyelko always hated him for this and himself more for making his gentle brother feel this way.
How he wished he could apologize.
Even to this imaginary one. he would feel lighter at least.
Out of the corner of his eyes,he spotted Makalaurë making his way towards them.
Tears were already covering his face before he ran to Maitimo's side and knelt down beside him.
Had the real Maitimo and Laurë both survived the battle? He hoped so.
What about the twins?
Tyelko realized he didn't know if any of them were actually as alive as he wished them to be.
At that moment two identical redheads, shorter than the first one came running into the throne room. Ambarussar were here too.
Tyelko frowned. If this was just a delusion, then why didn't all of the came together?
He coughed as the blood started clotting in his pipes and though it was weak, the sound echoed in the silence of the room and four set of eyes turned to look at him in shock and surprise.
Maitimo reacted faster than any of them and scrambled to hix feet, running the few steps between them and falling down next to him.
He shoved Dior's body aside and looked at him for a second before pulling him into his arms.
"Ambarussar! Go get a healer! Quick!"
Maitimo shouted but Tyelko shook his head.
This single action had him feel fainter as tears came streaming down his cheeks.
"N-No... do-on't se-end them...away... it's n-no use..."
"Nonsense! You're going to be alright! You will be alright!"
Tyelko smiled sadly before raising his hand slowly with what little strength he had left.
Maitimo,as if knowing his intentions took his hand in his own before putting it on his own cheek. Tyelko wiped away the tears as much as he could.
"I'm ... sorry... bro- brother... for everything.."
He shuddered as another wave of coughs interrupted his speech.
"Shhh... don't talk. Ambarussar I said go and get the damn healer! Don't you see how he is?"
But the twins didn't move and started weeping even more loudly. Makalaurë came and stood besides them before gathering them in his arms as sobs shook their bodies.
He didn't know why Maitimo, the most rational of them couldn't see it was over for him. The dagger Lúthien's son had left in his stomach as a gift didn't leave any doubts.
"It's...t-too late...for me... just...stay...will you? do-on't w...want to...to be alone..."
At this point he was full on heaving and every word was a struggle.
But it seemed they were no longer needed as Makalaurë led the still weeping twins towards them and they knelt down on his side, holding on to his hand.
Laurë wiped away the blood he had coughed from his chin and bowed his head in defeat as his shoulders trembled.
"Ne..Nelyo..."
"...yes?"
"I'm cold..."
And as his brother held on to him more tightly, Tyelko closed his eyes,
Never to be opened again upon Arda until the end of time.
