Check Appendix A, Gondor and the Heirs of Anarion/ The Stewards. You can read about it there since Thorongil served as Steward to Ecthelion II. I can't remember any other mention of this, but someone else might know more then me!
Kind of an aside to this... sone general 'Aragorn' questions:
With Aragorn learning of his heritage at age 20 (2951 III) from Elrond, and his first meeting of Arwen where he was clearly smitten, then heading off on his travels around Middle Earth and serving in both Rohan and Gondor, then wandering Middle Earth some more until he was around 49 (2980 III) when he again met Arwen in Lothlorien, when was he ever present in Eriador as Chieftain of the Dunedain of the North? I suppose the 20 years between his time in Lothloerien and his headding off to look for Gollum the first time at 69, he could have led the rangers, but he heads off to look for Gollum again when he's 78. Then at 87 he alone meets the Hobbits and is with them on the journey east and south. It fell to his '2nd in command' ... his 'XO' (executive officer) to again command the rangers of the north. This fell to Halbarad in the later years. It was good he had trust in his commanders so he coudl go off other places a lot.
