What do you think is the best essay/story in HoME?

Ones marked *were a collection put together by C.T in a collection of essays.

My favorite essay: Quendi and Eldar.

My favorite story: The New Shadow or The Lost Road

I also like Notion Club Papers and Ambarkanta not to mention Athrabeth.

Yes! The Fall of Gondolin! Magnificent!
But also from BoLT1 - the Coming of the Valar and building of Valinor; The Coming of the Elves and the building of Kor ...in fact I just can't tear myself off that book!

Essays: Athrabeth - Sure!!!!
But what about The Mariner's wife and Of the Palantiri from UT... just like Of Tuor... etc. - Are they to be considered in this thread too? They don't actually come from HoMe-series... Or do they?
Anyway, I love them!

Essays: Myths Transformed
Stories: The Lost Road, one tiny split mosquito-hair in front of The wanderings of Húrin.

There are just so many interesting and wonderful items to choose from!

Fortunately:)

Unfinished Tales should, IMO, be in the same 'category' as HoME. Some of the things that are in Unfinished Tales come from essays later publisd in HoME. (i.e, There are some things from the 'Shibboleth of Fëanor' and 'Of Dwarves and Men' in U.T.).

My choices:

'Shibboleth of Fëanor'-so much info on the Ñoldor!

'Tal-elmar'-shows injustices of Númenóreans.

Though it is not my top favorite, I just have to mention Dangweth Pengolodh because it enjoy it very much and no one ever mentions it it seems.

My favorites in the poll are Athrabeth, Quendi and Eldar, FoG... but Of Dwarves and Men and others are excellent too.

And of course, I second what Inderjit said, all that Noldor information in Shibboleth, especially the bit on the names of the descendants of Finwe, is of high value to me.

Anyhow if forced to pick one favorite it would be Q&E or Athrabeth... but they're too different to compare.

Haven't read 'Tal-elmar'.

I haven't read the whole of ME yet, but I liked the Lay of Leithian a lot, and the ones about the Trees in BOLT.

I voted for six of those up there. :D

The Athrabeth
Myths Transformed
Quendi and Eldar (but not the language part of it - Yuch!)
Of Dwarves and Men
Shibboleth of Fëanor
Last Writings

All of these are marvelous pieces of writing with astonishing new information. I heartily recommend them to anyone who hasn't read them.
