I saw there was a movie thread, but given that high budget long running TV Shows are extremely popular these days, I think the content of Children of Hurin is much better to suited to one of these. Given there is a great length of time that passes in the book, and the huge amount of content, dividing it up into hour long episodes would relax the delivery. It would also give room for the writers (if they're good) to flesh out dialogue and take some liberties. I'm thinking there are 5 distinct events, which could even serve as seasons: Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Doriath, Amon Rudh, Nargothrond, Return to Dor-Lomin + Brethil.

A final season or episode could deal with Hurin wrapping things up and finally dying. I think that giving the whole family closure would do the show justice. Also, Thingol receiving the Nauglimir and introducing the Silmaril would be a clever way to set up a spin-off (Beren and Luthien), if they wanted. Also there are several references to Beren throughout the book. Tuor is also mentioned by Gelmir and Arminas which would tie in Fall of Gondolin.

I really like this book as the basis for a show because the characters are all flawed and dark. It's completely on trend with the shows today and audiences I think would react very positively. I'm fairly certain Beren and Luthien will acquire the big or small screen before COH, given the quest nature and the nobility of Beren and the romance, but I'm more interested in COH.

What are your thoughts? Do you think a movie or a show would do the book justice? What events in COH would you like to see made into film or TV?

Oh i soo wish i could see all that but they can't touch anything. To be honest, to watch all of this in a 90's style japanese animation would be a dream come true for me but i'm ok if it was well done in live action. Children of Húrin should be a dark and bad ass show definitely.

Lest just imagine that COH could start something like this and the dude that comes out of the bushes goes like: "What are you doing here Morwen?". Then she beholds some secret duel between a Fëanorian and a Sindar.

I'm not sure what any of that means, but definitely NO to that beginning. There is so much good material in COH, there is no need to be making stuff up. The logical points to start the show off would be when Hurin meets Morwen for the last time, have a scene, then flash it all back. But personally I would like it to start with Hurin as the warrior going off to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, and Turin is a young boy.

I love COH, but I can't ever see it being made into a series/film for the simple reason that there is no happy ending. And come to think of it, no happy middle or beginning either. I don't personally see that as a barrier to a good story - I love a good tragedy - but it just wouldn't get financed.

My comparison is Game of Thrones, which was hugely successful. Are you saying though that there aren't any good points to draw upon, when at least there were a couple in Game of Thrones. GoT was pretty dark.

And obviously I know if any of the Silmarillion gets made into a show/movie it will be Beren and Luthien.

Well I don't personally rate GoT, so perhaps I'm the wrong person to ask.
There are plenty of good points to draw on in COH - it's my favourite Tolkien story after LotR and I'd love to see it made. I just don't think the TPTB would view it as a commercial prospect.

Who knows right? My dream is that their is a major Tolkien enthusiast with loads of money. The darkness and depression of it wouldn't be an issue in my opinion. So many hopeless and dark shows are trending these days.

You just need the right lottery numbers ;)
