Eä's Redemption

XVI. Of the darkening of Valinor

When Manwë came to know of Melkor's direction,
he deemed it clear where the enemy was headed to;
in his previous lair in Middle Earth, with retrospection,
to revive his device; of which they mostly had no clue.

Oromë and Tulkas rushed to the North in a fruitless pursuit;
they found no hints at the Teleri shores or the wastelands,
expanding to the icy zone; yet Melkor would always convolute,
for he had lured them there, fleeing south with evil plans.

For Melkor was still one of the Valar, doted on with gifts,
he could change his appearance or wander formless,
soon he'd lose his ability to do so and shapeshift,
forever bound to his ugly might but somewhat less.

So, unnoticed, Melkor reached the grim zone of Avathar.
Narrow lands at the north of the Eldamar Bay,
in the eastern foothill of the Pelori that were
still unexplored and unlit; desolate shores and waves.

There, among the steep mountain walls,
the frosty black sea; deepest shadows and dull skies,
in Avathar, Ungoliant undisturbed would strawl,
having built a den in secrecy, with lurking eyes.

The Eldar knew not where she had come from,
some say in ancient epochs Melkor had corrupted her,
first when he had avidly looked at Manwë's kingdom,
she had sworn to serve the evil master and to only hurt.

Soon she renounced the alleged lord, to serve
her gluttony alone and no one else beyond her hunger,
to swallow everything she could, for she starved
no matter what she sucked in, the void was ever under.

She hid in the south, for Oromë and his hunters
had their attention too alerted to the northern lands,
in the unprotected south of Arda, the lair of an abductor,
she remained for a long while, unbothered by no one.

From there she crept to the shine of the Blessed Realm,
for she simultaneously craved the light and despised it,
it made her starve, all her senses it would overwhelm,
ultimately she decided she would eat it; and she eyed it.
