It clearly leaves his body when the finger it is one gets cut off, but where does it stop?

i.e.

~ it left him when his finger with it on got cut off,

~ clearly when his hand with it on gets cut off,

~ and when his arm with it on gets cut off,

but where then? half his body? does that include his head? if he got cut directly in half from head to groin does that mean the ring left his body? does the ring have to be connected by the body to his head?

Thoughts and ideas please

(just another crazy Thôl idea)

Uhm... Well I really never thought about it, probly because it would never realy matter... The point was this Ring was meant to do whatever it does when you put it on you're finger, and if your body gets cut off you're dead anyways right?

I think the Ring has left an individual when it is no longer with the spirit of that person. If it is on an arm that is removed from the body, then it has left that person and is near him.

I someone is sliced in half, they are dead and the spirit gone, so the Ring is not with that person.

Basically I agree with Nom. . .so unless a Maia has his spirit in his fingers, it left him right away. . .

OR! And we could argue this. . .What if it never did? The will of Sauron went with the ring, so you could sort of say it never left him.

Well what i am angling at is, what if the finger, hand and arm it was on was still connected to his head? would he still be in control etc?

If it was still connected to his head I presume that he would be alive. I'm not sure what you're trying to ask... Remember that if there is no body there is no person...

Well, considering his 'immorality' there would be a person. It would just be a disembodied power, weakened though still existant. That's why I say there is an arguement that he never lost the ring. He just couldn't control it as well.

It's a weak arguement, and I'm not as deep into Ring Lore. I prefer characters to the physics of rings.

Well he has been cut in half (literally), that would kill anybody surely?

I dunno, hence why im askin the question :D

It would not kill the Maiar form of Sauron. His spirit fled from his body after the Ring was cut from hist hand. It would not matter if he was cut strait in half; there would still be the same effect of Sauron's spirit fleeing. Sauron, being a Maiar, could not truly die. He has been disembodied before, the most recent before the Last Alliance the drowning of Numenor.

But now he can only come back ugly! Terrible punishment. . .

I wonder why. . .

Maybe I'm being a little draconian, but there has to be a hasher punishment available for evil maia than to say "Poof, you have to be ugly now!"

WOAH! big word usage...Thôl is dumb member

Well he may have still been fair, but only not in the eyes of Men, maybe it was engrained into them somehow by the Valar/Ilútavar that he was bad because of the humungous hurt he did to the race of Men or something...
