Here's one for ya-
When the Rohan people are arriving at Helm's Deep, we cut to a scene with Saruman and Wormtongue talking about breaching the Deeping Wall. As the scene starts, Saruman pours a small container of (gunpowder?) into the bomb, which is nearly full. Now I would guess that the entire thing was to be filled with this black material, so- Just how long has Saruman been pouring bit by bit into the bomb to fill it up? Or is the rest of the bomb filled with something else (what)?

I don't think it is full of the same gunpowder. It must be something else.

I didn't get that at first, but I did later-I just hadn't realized that that was what they were using to destroy helm's deep.

I would guess that the whole thing is structured like a large hand grenade filled with explosive powder of Saruman's invention, with a detonater of something akin to fulminate of mercury. How long to fill the bomb would depend on the size of the measuring scoop and how fast Saruman was scooping! :p
