I was 12 or 13 when I first read the LoTR and The Hobbit. I have yet to finish the Silmarillion book, though I'm familiar with the lore.

I was 7 when I first read The Hobbit, and 9 when I read LotR, and 13 when I read The Silmarillion

I read LOTR when I was eight. Far too young, but some scenes stuck in my memory - the eleventyth birthday, the feel pattering after them in Moria, the log with eyes, the endless forces poring about of Isengard, the, Gollum final "Precious" as he falls into the crack. Loved the Hobbit when I was 13, read LOTR again when I was 15 or so, and loved it. Re-read many times since. Silmarillion I read when I was 18, loved it too.

I was 16 when I first read LotR and 17 when I read The Hobbit. I was 16-17 when I read The Silmarillion. I've read The Silmarillion over 11 times since.

I am currently reading lotr (for the second time) the first time I read it was when I was 11. I have been trying to get a hold of the Hobbit for soooo long but I have not yet succeeded.

Your public library should have copies, and if not, I often see them in thrift stores like Goodwill. In fact, I bought my first Hobbit and LOTR paperbacks at a junque store at age 17. Good luck!
