Now the thing about LOTR is, its not the fantasy that makes it good. Its how it constructs the story. (Although fantasy for sure is fun)
But what other fantasy books or stories does poorly on often, this is even partly true in "Eragon" book i read when i was a teen. Is.
They focus too much on character personalities or how they view those personalities, so it becomes dialog driven mess often.
Compared to Lord of the Rings where, the story is the events, aka what happens around them. So you are more absorbed with the journey itself and not "How is this character like?" I think a common thing among lets say female authors is they tend to focus on the social aspect of humans. Like Harry Potter books (Though i do like Harry Potter stories though).
But thats why Lord of the Rings is still on top, its about the journey itself, the characters arent hugely fleshed out, out of design. It has a simple story, but it also has depth to that simpleness. Something like that is likely hard to replicate unless one is really good at understanding the idea that made LOTR so good.
