Arnor 'Royal land' :"... be explained after invention as due to a blending of Q. arnanóre/arnanor with S. arn(a)dor > ardor. The name was in any case given to mean 'royal land' as being the realm of Elendil and so taking precedence of the southern realm." ~JRRT
The Gondorian province of Anórien was named after Anorian, son of Elendil, and its capitol was Minas Anor, which later became Minas Tirith. Arnor was named such as it was 'the land of the king' where high king Elendil reigned over northern Arnor and southern Gondor.
Gondor was called 'Stoningland' in the Elven tongue and 'Stáning-land' by the Rohirrim.
Interesting. I wonder if it's because a lot of people got stoned there.
(Not that some were getting stoned as opposed to stoned, or that getting stoned was an especially prevalent occurrence, or that a lot of people were trying to get other people stoned or anything..."stoningland" just has a bit of a - well, odd - associative picture coupled to it given events over the last few decades or so.)
