Is it considered polite to call a German woman "Fraulein" nowadays?

What are you even on about?
Are you a native speaker of German? Or at least have some working knowledge of German?
If so, I could give you the link to the article in the German edition of Wikipedia on the term. There's also a very short article in the English edition. And both will give you the correct search result even if you enter "fraulein" without the umlaut.

I was just nosing around the English Wikipedia article about the TV serial "Dallas", when an item resurfaced in memory due to reading the names of the cast.
Kind of turning the tables on the OP question, can anyone explain why the matriarch of the Ewing clan, mostly played by Barbara Bel Geddes, is commonly referred to as Miss Ellie??? 🤯

It's a Southern thing. 😉
Ditto.

Interesting tangent to that: In England of yesteryear (and it may still be true in the "great manor houses") the head Housekeeper was always addressed as "Mrs." even if she was unmarried.
She was typically older than the other servants (except for the Butler), and the title was "a courtesy used to reflect a level of authority, age, and respect."
(Cf. Mrs Hughes of Downton Abbey)
