💀Nazgul (Ulairi) vs Balrog?

We're having a nice exchange of ideas, trying to reach a consensus, not having a never ending "I'm right & you're all wrong no matter what the facts are" battle......

Actually hypothetically the nazgul could win in a fight with a balrog. You see Gandalf the grey and the Balrog he found in Moria were near the same rank in ME angel ranking standards, but Gandalf the WHITE still lost to the witchking. now this has always bugged me because the nine are not even angels in ME, but then i thought wouldn't it make sense if the nine drew power from Sauron? their souls are bound to the ring (and thus Sauron who outclasses Gandalf) so it would make sense if sauron needed it he could send power to help his servants if they got in trouble, Balrogs have no such connection with Sauron and any benifit they possibly could have gained from morgoth would be null. So if a balrog decided to fight the nine sauron could just send in some power to help and they could have a chance killing it (assuming they had the witch king with them).

Wasn't that only in the movie that he was "defeated" by the Witch King? If I remember right (don't have my books with me), in the book it's between Gandalf and the Witch King. Gandalf faces him but then when the Rohirrim arrive, the Witch King runs off to deal with them and it's left unresolved as to who won and who was defeated.

Yes the Witch King left when the Rohirrim arrive and Gandalf would have pursued him then but Pippin came and told of the peril to Faramir and so Gandalf had to go to save Faramir leaving the Witch King to be defeated by Éowyn with the help of Merry in accordance with what was foretold.

Gandalf DID NOT LOSE to the Witch-King.

That was silly Peter Jackson movie BS, which should be forgotten.

Gandalf can be said to have technically won at the gates, due to the Witch-King realizing he was about to lose the field due to the Arrival of the Rohirrim's Éoherë. (And, in the Witch-King's mind, this was 6,000 of the best Cavalry in Middle-earth, combined with an additional 4,000 - 6,000 Cavalry that were typically superior, although not supreme, as the first 6,000 would have been). But had the confrontation continued, Gandalf would have wiped the floor with the Witch-King, bringing yet another twist to the "no man shall kill him" prophecy of Glorfindel (Gandalf being a Maia wearing a man-suit, and not an actual "man)..

As to the original question:

The Witch-King would have been turned into a greasy smear by the Balrog, which would be able to use one of the most effective weapons against the Nazgûl: Fire.

And The Letters of JRR Tolkien are probably not the best source for this question. The History of Middle-earth or The Road to Middle-earth by Tom Shippey would be the best source for examining that sort of conflict.

That said.... This is one of those kinds of questions that infuriated Tolkien. Yet it remains one that many people tend to ask, in their desire to qualify everything.

Also, at the time of the War of the Ring the Nazgûl did not have their Rings.

It discusses in the Appendices that Sauron took back the Rings from the Nazgûl after they had been enslaved.

oh thanks for the clarification I've read Tolkien works several times through and I still didn't catch those small discrepancy's. And i guess it does make sense considering Aragorn wiped the floor with all nine, but still was not powerful enough to even harm a Balrog.

Yeah, definitely don't take anything PJ has in his movies as canon in the Tolkienverse.
