does anyone know if Ephel Brandir was renamed Obel Harad?(between the time when Turin killed Brandir and Hurin arrived at Obel Harad, in the "wanderings of Hurin)
or is it a different place entirely?

Obel Halad was the name for the dwelling place of the lords of the Haladin in Brethil, C.T remarks in the notes (#17) which accompany 'The Wanderings of Hurin' "A first mention of Obel Halad, replacing Ephel Brandir, is found on a typescript note to NE. That note reads "against the name Ephel Brandir, my father wrote faintly on the amaneunis script that was made from the manuscript: Obel Halad "....of the chieftain" the illegible word might be 'tower' but looks more like town, 'town of the chieftain' is quite possibly the correct interpretation. "Ephel Brandir" means "the encircling fence of Brandir", and was a recent invention, Brandir being the lord of the Haladin from 495-499, and the fortification upon Amon Obel, where most of the Haladin removed to after Morgoth began to invade their land was called "Ephel Brandir" and it was a great fortification, or town. Obel Halad indeed seems to a replacement, or perhaps the 'original name' for Ephil Brandir (since Brandir was dead, and the name couldn't have existed for more than 4 years) as C.T notes in the appendix next to Obel Halad "the fortified place in which stood the hall of the chieftians of Brethil".

Then I would reccommned calling it "Ephil Brandir" since the Narn (or the parts of the Narn which are concerned with Brethil) is set in the time of Brandir, though you could also use the older name too, lots of places had more than one name-Gondolin had seven.
