Today I was approached by a person I know. I hadn't seen them in a while, and told them that I had recently been really interested in Tolkien's works. They proposed an interesting theory behind the inspiration of some of the different races of Arda:
They said that they believed Elves were modeled more off the Welsh, Dwarves off the Scottish and Men off the English. I was wondering if anyone knew more about this? What other influences from Tolkien's every day life can be found in his works?

omigosh, are you ever in for a deluge 😄.
Events like the ruin of Orthanc by Saurman (he of the "mind of metal and wheels") were inspired by Tolkien seeing the industrial ruination of the country side.
The tower specifically was thought to be [loosely] modeled on Perrott's Folly which Tolkien would have seen daily because he spent part of his life in Birmingham.
