Painted in 1944 by Paul Nash it is based on two actual clumps of trees on hills near Oxford (Wittenham Clumps) which are a distinctive feature in the landscape. Nash did many paintings and drawings of the clumps but I was struck by the moonlight vs sunlight of this painting. The vernal or spring equinox is when the day is evenly divided with 12 hours between sunrise and sunset. Tolkien could have seen this painting and most likely would have known the clumps.
Landscape of the Vernal Equinox by Paul Nash (1944) - currently in storage (!) in The National Museum of Scotland I believe.
