In Lord of the Rings, couldn't the Eagles fly the Fellowship to Rhun or Khand to the east or south of Mordor or they could go on horseback and then everyone can sneak in from those directions unnoticed easily?

As to terrestrial travel, it should be known that Hobbits are seriously short-legged. Same goes for ponies they can ride. So let's increase the distance they have to travel (everything additional being through enemy territory) five times? There was a certain urgency to getting the job done ... 🙄😠😡🤬
OK, I wouldn't normally post a movie discussion here, and I hope you don't mind, Radaghast, but one or two of the "answers" here conflate book and movies, something I find particularly infuriating:
Don't mind at all. Indeed, Peter Jackson is the number one offender when it comes to misunderstanding Tolkien, and the number one reason others do as well.
I read a fanfiction a while back that showed how Sauron developed his techniques to make the one ring and the nine,he used a dragon's blood(that was promised to him by the dragon herself,and she was fed the blood of Morgoth so she was really powerful). He first made collars,then changed them to bracelets,and the author has yet to update the next part (which involves Eregion and Annatar) so I'll tell you guys later about what happened 😁

This reminds me of a post (perhaps an older one) where someone overheard some people seriously below the age of Hobbit majority, having seen PJ's films, are supposed to have exclaimed in a bookstore "Oh look, they've done a novelization of the films already!"
It's stuff like this that makes me think "Why, oh why did Shoemaker–Levy 9 miss us?", or "Aren't Yellowstone, the Phlegraean Fields and Toba all overdue?"
