Reconnaissance East
Having taken up strong positions along the North Downs, Elendur ordered a company of mounted men to make a sweep east over the steppes toward the Ettenmoors. Commanded by Arvedui, both Silvanis and Caritas were among them. Twenty in total, and they set out in the night.
What they did not know was the Orcs under Genreral Og were moving across to raid the North Downs. These orcs were bold, and though they hated the daylight, the thick cloud and fog covered their approach. It was only because the recon had gone out that they were discovered.
Riding right into their formation, the mounted soldiers took the foot infantry by surprise. Fifteen orcs were slain, including General Og before they realised they had men among them. When the black arrows started flying this way and that, a further three orcs were slain by their own, and two men were hit.
Silvanis suffered a graze on his temple as the flett cut him as it passed. Arvedui ordered then to retreat before too many more were hurt as their surprise had passed. They slipped away in the fog and were soon back atop the North Downs reporting their contact and a high alert was sent down the line.
But the orcs never came. With the slaying of General Og, the sub-commanders could not agree on their course of action even though it was to be a large invasion. After a short debate on who was in command and the death of another sub-commander from infighting between the factions, the orcs retreated northeast back to the Ettenmoors.
The men of Arthedain won this fight and prevented the invasion that would now not come for another thirty years. They did still have to contend with the raids of the Hillmen, but even these seemed to taper back to nil over the years, giving the Dunedain of Arthedain a little reprieve. When the big attack came in TA 1974, Prince Arvedui would be king and though the Dunedain had maintained their strength, the forces that the Witch King unleashed upon the North Downs were massive and much better led. Angmar had better prepared their leadership to be more proactive.
