Happy Birthday, @WatcherWraith! Here is a gift for you, inspired by your fanfiction 'On Behalf of the Dead'.
I am glad to have met you, and I deeply appreciate the discussions we have had about our creative writings. As you well know, it means a lot to me. ❤️ 🫂
May the Lord bless you, and keep you in the palm of his hand, this day, and always.
This is something I think Curufin would have done at some point after Hannah was adopted into Fëanor’s family. He would have taken the time to make this small thing for her, despite the pressing and uncertain situation.
And along with the locket, there would be a letter. Perhaps Curufin would give these to Hannah in person. Or perhaps he might leave them somewhere for her to notice and pick up.
Dear Rehtawendë, my new sister.
I thought to make you something, as I do for my brothers upon special occasions, or upon occasions where my heart is moved to do so.
But what to make, I wondered, when I do not know you, nor know the things you most love? As yet, you do not know our tongue, and your own is likewise a foreign thing to my ears.
When Haru Finwë called upon you to sing before us, I listened carefully. You have a strong and a well-formed voice: I could hear that singing is something you find joy in ordinarily, similarly to my brother Makalaurë. I know that the heart of the maker is something that is often revealed in their craft. And from this, I had an idea of what to give you.
The strength and beauty of your words was plain to hear, though I could not hear the meaning they contained. A solid and sure exterior, and a mysterious openness within, as though it were a gust of wind passing by too quickly for my ears to catch it.
So here is my gift to you: a locket that you may wear on a chain. The white jewels on the front shine as brightly as the hope you have brought to us in this time of darkness. Engraved on the back are the initials of the names Atar and Amil have given you: Rehtawendë Thornalissë. The back of the locket opens like a pair of gates, and it is hollow within.
I do not know what you hold dear, or most desire in your heart. So I have left this hollow space for you: place whatever you wish within it, shielded from all eyes unless you choose to reveal it, and may it be a comfort to you in this place, where you perhaps still feel like a stranger. For I do not doubt that your customs and way of life were different to ours, wherever you dwelled before.
I know that you will not yet be able to read this, but I write it anyway, looking forward to that day when the two of us shall understand each other better, and thence grow nearer in companionship. For you are now of the house of Fëanáro, and the bonds of love we have for each other are strong.
With affection,
your brother
