A 14th century French song. Lyrics translation:

I should lead a happy life,
sweet creature,
if only you truly realized
that you where the cause of all
my concern.

Lady of cheerful bearing,
pleasing, bright and pure,
often the woe I suffer
to serve you loyally
makes me say 'alas!'

And you may be sure
that I can in no way
go on living like this, if it lasts
any longer.

For you are merciless to me
and pitilessly obdurate,
and have put such longing
into my heart,
that it will certainly die
a most dismal death,
unless for its relief
your mercy is soon
ready.

I couldn't afford tickets. 😭

PS: If you want to know the significance of 4:30, I posted the original music video here:

(But be prepared for tears)

EDIT: Oops -- I was just reminded I linked this in a followup post, sorry. 😳

No, wait -- not sorry; my Disney princess is worth a repost! 🤩

I've been revisiting my Faun playlist. So many changes in the band over the last 20+ years. Each revision, though something was lost, something new was gained.

This is a 2010 live performance, a rare one with Sandra singing and playing the hurdy gurdy. Wasn't in the band long as she had some health issues and couldn't tour.

Back when I was in 7th grade, my school’s choir did this song. It left quite an impression on me and even after all these years I have never forgotten it. Quite a fun and complex song to work with!

“How Can I Stop Singing My Song?”

Lyrics:

How can I keep from singing
When the music fills my soul?
How can I keep from singing
When the rhythm takes control?

Like a deep and winding river,
It runs and overflows,
So how can I stop?
How can I stop singing my song?

How can I keep from singing
When the music stirs my heart?
How can I keep from singing
When the restless rhythms start?

They race within my being,
A time and place apart.
So how can I stop?
How can I stop singing my song?

Then at times it woos me,
Calling my name
Like a quiet whisper,
Always the same

But I can’t resist its plaintive refrain!
So time after time I am drawn again
(Time after time I am drawn again)

How can I keep from singing
When the music fills my soul?
How can I keep from singing
When the rhythm takes control?

Like a deep and winding river
(Deep and winding river, deep and winding river)
It runs and overflows

So how can I stop?
How can I stop singing?
Oh, how can I stop?
How can I stop singing?
Oh, how can I stop?
How can I stop singing?
Oh how can I stop?
How can I stop singing my song?

Listened to this interesting rock cover of Sonny & Cher's 'Bang Bang' today.

Remember seeing Sonny & Cher doing it on their TV show as a kid, but remember Nancy Sinatra's cover of it the most.

Here is an excellent cover of Nancy Sinatra's version (a cover of a cover?)

In lieu of the whole TTF Youth Group/TTF Geezer group talk somewhere...

When IU was a child, her father's business collapsed, plunging the family into such poverty that she had to be sent to live with her grandmother, in a tiny roach-infested apartment. She developed severe insomnia -- which she still suffers from -- and could fall asleep only with her head lying on her grandmother's lap. Years later, she wrote a lovely song about that time:

Well it's about time for my bi-annual Zeppathon, where I listen to every Led Zeppelin album in order of release.
It's probably the only time I stop listening to my Dylan/The Band/Stones/Beatles endless loop.

This song, 'The tribe of Dana', combines a Breton folk/traditional melody with French rap.

I have translated the lyrics:

The wind blows over the plains of Armorican Brittany
I take one last look at my wife, my son and my lands
Akim, the son of the smith came to fetch me
The druids have decided to battle in the valley
Where all our ancestors, great Celt warriors
After great battles made themselves the rulers
Now the hour comes to defend our land
Against an army of Cimmerians ready to cross swords

All the tribe gathered around tall menhirs
To invoke the gods so they would bless us
After this prayer with my brothers, without stirring up zeal
The chiefs gave us all a few mouthfuls of mead
For courage, so that we would not falter
So that we’d stand tall and proud in the battle
Because it’s the first time I am going off to fight
And I hope I am worthy to be of the tribe of Dana

Refrain:
In the valley, oh oh, of Dana, la-li-la-la
In the valley, oh oh, I could hear the echoes
In the valley, oh oh, of Dana, la-li-la-la
In the valley, oh oh, of songs of war near the tombs

After some incantations of druids and of magic
All the tribe, swords in hand, ran towards the enemy
The struggle was terrible and I could see nothing but shadows
Cutting through the enemy that returned always in greater numbers
My brothers fell one after the other in front of my eyes
Under the weight of the weapons held by all these barbarians
Spears, axes and swords in the garden of Eden
Spilling blood on the green grass of the plain

Like on those days of trouble where man pushes himself
To the limits of rulership, of evil and of hate
This already-lost battle had to be continued
But such was the pride of all the tribe
The struggle continued on like this until the setting of the sun
With extreme ferocity on top of relentless tenacity
We had to defend the land where our ancestors are buried
For the sake of all the laws of the tribe of Dana

[Refrain]

At the end of the valley, the sound of a horn was heard
Of an enemy chief calling his horde back
Had he understood that we’d fight even in hell
And that these lands belonged to the tribe of Dana?
The warriors were leaving and I couldn’t understand
They had come such a long way to get to this point
When I happened to gaze upon my surroundings
I was the last one standing of my tribe, and that was why

My fingers grew slack as I dropped my weapons
And along my cheeks tears began to stream
I have never understood why the gods spared me
From this dark day of our history which I have recounted

The wind still blows over Armorican Brittany
And I have returned to my wife, my son and my lands
I rebuilt it all with my own hands to get to this point
I have become the king of the tribe of Dana

[Refrain]
