I have just bought this new book (don't have the other one) and am finding it incredibly useful. I am a 'reborn' keen reader of Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and am now starting to make my way through other texts. For me this dictionary is a fabulous way to broaden my knowledge of content, characters and places without all the 'now why do I know that name?' sort of thinking.
For me I'd summarise as follows:
1) Nicely matches my other 'new style illustrated hardback' books on the shelf
2) Is a beautifully illustrated book
3) Provides easily accessible confirmation of details, quickly as I read the current text (for me at least much quicker than following up footnotes - although that's often useful too)
4) Brings the story to life
5) Makes me appreciate Tolkien's work even more (and congratulations to Foster).
Definitely worth buying from my perspective and thanks Ent for such an excellent review.
