This is a painting of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
(Born Duchess Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie in Bavaria; 24 December 1837 – 10 September 1898), nicknamed Sisi or Sissi)

Men and women of her time raved about Elisabeth's beauty, but were equally attracted by her grace, charisma and the mysterious aura that is said to have surrounded the empress. Elisabeth was considered one of the most beautiful women of her time and was well aware of this.

A Bavarian-Austrian Arwen Undómiel?

Perhaps Tolkien would have found her very beautiful, too?

The death of Beleg, by Elena Kukanova. I really like the mood of the picture.

Here's another take on the scene, by Denis Gordeev.

Maedhros found a loophole that allows him to safely hold a Silmaril!

(@Server Room Gremlin , as our resident loophole expert, and as our resident Curufin who likely made the prosthetic, I know you'll appreciate this!)

There's tons of artwork out there but I figured maybe we could use this thread to share some of our favorites that we've come across by other artists. If you post any, try to give credit to the original artist in your post. I'll start, I found this on Reddit this morning of Turin vs Glaurung.

Old Japanese book covers for LotR by Ryuichi Terashima:

Apparently, Tolkien liked his work:

Clyde S. Kilby wrote in his memoir, Tolkien and The Silmarillion (1976), that Tolkien ‘was pleased with the Japanese translation of The Hobbit and showed me with particular satisfaction the frontispiece which portrayed Smaug falling convulsivley’ over Lake-town.

edit: here are a few of his bw-illustrations for LotR:

Lord of the Rings illustrations

As I mentioned before , Id like to show my LJ friends some of Ryuichi Terashimas illustrations for Lord of the Rings. I wonder how they look to Westerners eyes? (Galadriel and Frodo) (Frodo Samwise) (Merry Pippin in Isengard) (Eowyn) (Grey Havens)

They're quite good. I'm surprised at how NOT manga looking they are. Very western-style.

Honestly the art on its own is hilarious to me, even without the caption. 😂
