I am currently reading 1491 by Charles C. Mann and I just passed the following passage.

"The peoples of the andean societies saw themselves as members of hereditary lineages. (The same is true for europeans but lineages were more important in the Andes; The Lord of the Rings may suffice as a popcultural reference in which people introduce themselves as "X, son of Y" or "A of the line of B")
